  • "The Galway Shawl" is a traditional Irish folk song, concerning a rural courtship in the West of Ireland. The first known version was collected by Sam Henry from Bridget Kealey in Dungiven in 1936.[1] The song has been popularly recorded by many ballad groups in Ireland and is now commonly adapted to a waltz time so that people can dance to it.

  • Almost heaven, West of Ireland! Have a great time, will ye make it to Athenry (about 15 miles away)to see the fields?

  • hello Greenred... I'm in heaven already, living in the West of Scotland, which of course, if you know your history , has ancient cultural links with us. The ancient kingdom of Dalriada stretched through Antrim, Jura Isdlay and Loch Sween. In the 1800's we were known as "Irish" and our language as Irish. As for the Fields...I reckon..without boasting..I was one of the first Celtic crew there...so we were told by the publicans

  • greenred, the ghodsson here my comments below sound awfull bigheaded didn't mean to talk down to you. 'cos of 500 word limit my whole thing got edited. Best night I've ever had in Irekland was in Athlone. In the old 50's Glasgow days my mum from Derry would tune in to Radio Athlone for songs like Boola vogue and the Galway shawl. That's the music from home, son, she'ds say..thank God for Irish Mothers.

  • No worries. Brother lives in Pollokshields so very familiar with the area, history etc. Enjoy Galway, most laid back place in Ireland and thats saying something!
