@SSJtaco fact of the matter is, ember probably would do more in combuskens case. same type attack bonus and fighting type pokemon with weak special defense would cause ember to likely do more damage than the super effective physical attack peck with only 35 base power and fighting types have high physical defense so thats why chugga used ember.

@brianrocks1231 Except makuhita has the same special defense as defense, and combusken has the same special attack as attack. A same type attack bonus is only going to increase the power by 50% meaning ember is gonna have a power of 60. Meanwhile weakness does x2, so peck (35) would do 70.

Machop has a higher defense than special defense, but as he was having problems with makuhita... peck would have been better.

Actually, Chuggaa (don't know if you know), you CAN go to Slateport after delivering the letter to Steven. The only thing is that you can't advance to Mauville as the path will be blocked off (as well as the museum). So you could get Lombre nicknamed (and Teddy renicknamed), but that's not how you'd want to play through, I'm sure.
