It's better as us musicians, to learn from them rather than comparing their musical reach. They too lack some greatness somewhere in between, because music itself is hard to explore. The sea of musicality is unfathomable.

Guthrie can picks as faster than anyone out there trust me...the reason he doesnt play faster than what he does is he himself said theres no point as the faster you play the less interesting it becomes and phrasing is gone...people have no clue that even though guthrie is a mutant when coming to speed thats not what makes him special nor his technque...its his ideas without them he would be burning three ocatve scales like lane all day long....

allan holdsworth and guthrie sure as hell can't pick as fast as shawn lane or do his extreme stretches at those speeds. they can't switch it up like shawn could either. shawn is the king of switching and combining alternate picking, economy picking, legato, and hybrid picking. Guthrie has imitated Holdsworth and Lane in multiple videos, Lanes picking is something Holdsworth or Govan could both pick up on... Those things aren't something I think any of them would have a problem picking up quick enough. I stand to my position, all 3 are too good to be put above one another. Although Guthries personality and style is more likable than the others. That's about it. Still they're all amazing

Guthrie's playing is more tasteful and classy imo. Every note he plays has a meaning, it feels right and natural.
I also admie his soloing - not using licks but playing what goes through his head :) I mean listen to his shred lines - I never thought it's possible to improvise like this - imagining all the sophisticated note choices, rhythms and shapes with so much fuckin taste in it :)
SHAWN LANE for me. I love everything he's ever done. Sure gg can imitate other's but he doesnt have his own signature sound. And erotic cakes is so so in terms of rousing emotions. Shawn's compositions are amazing.
I just recently heard about Guthrie Govan and he appears to be quite versatile on guitar. However I think Shawn has the advantage due to his compositional skills. I'd say the same thing about Steve Morse. He can do many styles very very well but he can write some incredible compositions too.
Shawn Lane did all the great stuff he did without taking classes at GIT/MIT and never having more powerful music software available to musicians currently such as audio lick transposers, riffmasters, loopers and video surgeons - that sort of thing. He was pure heart!! GG is a good player who may obtain some sort of place in guitar shredder history later on. Guitarists can now accomplish alot of thngs that were much more difficult to acquire earlier. In the end it's the hit song that makes money!
As incredible as Guthrie is he isn't on Shawn's level. In fact, Shawn Lane is the only guitarist in the world to make me fall off my chair and I've seen and listened to hundreds of players.
Lanes approach to the guitar was MUCH more unorthadox and unique compared to guthries, much more of an interesting player atleast to my musical taste, Guthrie rocks the fuckin casbah like no other for sure though. Its almost impossible to compare these two, musicians of this caliber need no comparing since noone else that plays this instrument can even step to the level these two are on.

Who is saying Lane's phrasing is "poor"? Thats the most outrageous musical statement I've ever heard, save the statements made by 12 year old girls about Justin Bieber. Shawn Lane is a genius, plain and simple.
These kind of plurile comparisons should really not occur, but for what my 2 cents are worth, I think Lane and Govan aptly represent the difference between the musical genius employing an electric guitar and an extremely competent technician looking to create music using an electric guitar, respectively... (imo only!)
I could say that "amazing" has a very small meaning for their styles. I am not on the group who says that Lanes phrasing is boring or poor. To understand his incredible ability, you have to analize it very well with and advanced knowledge in music and guitar technique, or else, just take your guitar and try to do it :D, can you? XD

Personally I prefer just to decide whether I like what I'm hearing. If you like it, by all means analyse it and learn from it, but to compare such acomplished musicians in this way is and excercise in futility IMHO.

I dont think that anybody can come close to Shawn's technique. Not even Guthrie, even by his own admission there will never be another Shawn Lane. Guthrie's music is possible with practice - Shawn's.......well, it just isnt. Ironically, I dont think the songs posted here do Shawn justice. Oh, Im not taking anything away from Guthrie, he's a freak too, its just that Shawn was a bit more of a freak !
They both have a great feel and technique, but I guess you couldn't compare them because they both have very different ways of expressing themselves. People shouldn't say that someone is better just because he can play faster, they both have a great feel and still, it's not that similar of a music genre. But everyone has their own oppinion, that's why we should all just sit down, enjoy and thank them for what they both have to offer to us
I can't really stand Shawn Lane... his playing is really boring to me and the little shred bits he does do, don't really go with what he's playing. Guthrie is amazing and remains incredibly melodic even when he is shredding. That being said, I don't think Shawn is boring because he doesn't do shred all the time, that's just stupid, but I think he's boring just because he's boring. None of the songs here stuck out to me and the string pads sound beyond cheesy.
I honestly think music should be made into such competition like "Who's 'better' than who?", but as far as my interest goes, I'm with Guthrie. In my opinion, Guthrie's album "Erotic Cakes" is mixed with a pretty nice variety of insanely fast soloing, beautiful licks and a melodic touch that's had me melt in my seat a few times. Now with that, Shawn Lane is also incredible! What a virtuoso himself, his ability far exceeds that which I could expect from any guitarist! Rest in peace!

I look at it this way, If I am in a crying mood, and I want to feel pure passion run threw my body , I will listen to Lane, and if I want to hear fun, almost humorous playing, and improv that is beyond anyone's comprehension, then I will listen to Guthrie. Just depends on the mood.
Although Guthrie is amazing, he himself says that Shawn Lane was one of the greatest ever. If you don't believe me, have a look at the Shawn Lane licks that Guthrie submitted as a transcription for Guitar Magazine, which is separate from his transcription of his composition, wonderful slippery thing, also submitted to the same magazine.
Oh, and that IS an epic eric johnson song covered by guthrie, called "Manhattan". And I don't think anyone else but Johnson himself can do it better, honestly
@snyggman do you just get the feeling that if Guthrie attempted to play a one of shawns augmented patterns up to speed hed just spazz out? Guthrie has some of the most incredible patterns and phrasing I've ever seen, but I just cant help but think some of Lane's licks might stump him.

I first started listening to GGt but I learned about Shawn lane and he had a more interesting life then GG. So Shawn becuase he was an inspiration more than just his guitar playing.
I like both guitarists for different reasons...it's like which is better hamburgers or pizza? I like Hamburgers but doesn't mean I want to only eat that all the time...
You can't choose between them technicaly, both were the best ever in that sense, musicaly i think Lane had the slight edge, but seeing as Guthrie only has one record out, I think he will turn out to be every much of the genius lane was. We can only hope Guthrie finds a "jonas" to elavate his playing to another leval like Jonas did for Shawn.

no one can even touch shawn. he was god on earth of guitar. Guthrie is the greatest living player but, no one even comes close to shawn's musical capabilities technical skill and most of all his feel for the instrument. he was untouchable
Love Lane, but GG easily takes the win for me. Music is music and Govan delivers on creativity, technique, and style. His phrasing is unreal and that's sometime where Lane bores me.
shawn lane was technically better in my opinion, and faster obviously. but they have a different taste in music which ofcourse shows in their material... so to judge who is a more skilled guitarist by comparing their material is silly.
They are both clearly the best guitarists of all time in the rock/jazz/fusion genre
Manhattan was GG transcription for UK guitar mag. He's done lots of that.
To be honest, some of SL's is a bit like elevator music with shredding. SL also demonstrates on his instructional that he can't play a particular run without starting with an upstroke. The reason is he sweeps it - like most of his fast picking. And it wasn't that hard; GG could definitely alternate pick something like that. But I prefer SL's tone.
Guthrie Govan......hands down.......no questions asked.......

These kind of plurile comparisons should really not occur, but for what my 2 cents are worth, I think Lane and Govan aptly represent the difference between the musical genius employing an electric guitar and an extremely competent technician looking to create music using an electric guitar, respectively... (imo only!)

I could say that "amazing" has a very small meaning for their styles. I am not on the group who says that Lanes phrasing is boring or poor. To understand his incredible ability, you have to analize it very well with and advanced knowledge in music and guitar technique, or else, just take your guitar and try to do it :D, can you? XD

Personally I prefer just to decide whether I like what I'm hearing. If you like it, by all means analyse it and learn from it, but to compare such acomplished musicians in this way is and excercise in futility IMHO.

I dont think that anybody can come close to Shawn's technique. Not even Guthrie, even by his own admission there will never be another Shawn Lane. Guthrie's music is possible with practice - Shawn's.......well, it just isnt. Ironically, I dont think the songs posted here do Shawn justice. Oh, Im not taking anything away from Guthrie, he's a freak too, its just that Shawn was a bit more of a freak !

They both have a great feel and technique, but I guess you couldn't compare them because they both have very different ways of expressing themselves. People shouldn't say that someone is better just because he can play faster, they both have a great feel and still, it's not that similar of a music genre. But everyone has their own oppinion, that's why we should all just sit down, enjoy and thank them for what they both have to offer to us

I can't really stand Shawn Lane... his playing is really boring to me and the little shred bits he does do, don't really go with what he's playing. Guthrie is amazing and remains incredibly melodic even when he is shredding. That being said, I don't think Shawn is boring because he doesn't do shred all the time, that's just stupid, but I think he's boring just because he's boring. None of the songs here stuck out to me and the string pads sound beyond cheesy.

I honestly think music should be made into such competition like "Who's 'better' than who?", but as far as my interest goes, I'm with Guthrie. In my opinion, Guthrie's album "Erotic Cakes" is mixed with a pretty nice variety of insanely fast soloing, beautiful licks and a melodic touch that's had me melt in my seat a few times. Now with that, Shawn Lane is also incredible! What a virtuoso himself, his ability far exceeds that which I could expect from any guitarist! Rest in peace!

I look at it this way, If I am in a crying mood, and I want to feel pure passion run threw my body , I will listen to Lane, and if I want to hear fun, almost humorous playing, and improv that is beyond anyone's comprehension, then I will listen to Guthrie. Just depends on the mood.

Although Guthrie is amazing, he himself says that Shawn Lane was one of the greatest ever. If you don't believe me, have a look at the Shawn Lane licks that Guthrie submitted as a transcription for Guitar Magazine, which is separate from his transcription of his composition, wonderful slippery thing, also submitted to the same magazine.
Oh, and that IS an epic eric johnson song covered by guthrie, called "Manhattan". And I don't think anyone else but Johnson himself can do it better, honestly

@snyggman do you just get the feeling that if Guthrie attempted to play a one of shawns augmented patterns up to speed hed just spazz out? Guthrie has some of the most incredible patterns and phrasing I've ever seen, but I just cant help but think some of Lane's licks might stump him.

@Kingding6 I dont think there is anything guthrie cant play if he puts in some work. I think he is a better improver than lane though. That is the only area that I think he beats lane, in my opinion. It is hard to talk about it because i love them both. haha.

You can't choose between them technicaly, both were the best ever in that sense, musicaly i think Lane had the slight edge, but seeing as Guthrie only has one record out, I think he will turn out to be every much of the genius lane was. We can only hope Guthrie finds a "jonas" to elavate his playing to another leval like Jonas did for Shawn.

Guthrie by far :D I like his abillity to play all sorts of music and styles.. but shawn plays BEAUTIFUL! a lot of times, and has an exelent tone.. Guthrie to me just feels, more enjoyable... but I vote for Wonderful slippery thing or erotic cakes instead of Manhattan.. just 'cause they are GG original

no one can even touch shawn. he was god on earth of guitar. Guthrie is the greatest living player but, no one even comes close to shawn's musical capabilities technical skill and most of all his feel for the instrument. he was untouchable

Love Lane, but GG easily takes the win for me. Music is music and Govan delivers on creativity, technique, and style. His phrasing is unreal and that's sometime where Lane bores me.

shawn lane was technically better in my opinion, and faster obviously. but they have a different taste in music which ofcourse shows in their material... so to judge who is a more skilled guitarist by comparing their material is silly.
They are both clearly the best guitarists of all time in the rock/jazz/fusion genre

Manhattan was GG transcription for UK guitar mag. He's done lots of that.
To be honest, some of SL's is a bit like elevator music with shredding. SL also demonstrates on his instructional that he can't play a particular run without starting with an upstroke. The reason is he sweeps it - like most of his fast picking. And it wasn't that hard; GG could definitely alternate pick something like that. But I prefer SL's tone.
