I really never played the Wonder Boy series but Im a long time fan of Adventure Island. I knew of the um... "split timelines" of the games but seeing wonder boy so vastly different just shocks me. I do like AI2 and AI3. AI3 is overall really damn good. Super Adventure Island is also awesome for its updated graphics and music.
Oh my God, I had this game on the Sega Game Gear, I just remembered it when I saw this. I lost the game when I was four years old. I looooooooved this game, I miss it so! D: (Boo! Hoo!)
wait , If you played those gamers at that time , you should be now 28 or 30 years old . BUT , how this girls seems to be 16 years ? . Iguess that I going to do some make up on me . :)
The Hudson character was based on Takahashi Meijin (Meijin = expert). He was a professional gamer heavily involved with Hudson and famous for his 16 button hits per second (you can find YT vids on it) and was pretty famous back then. And yes, he has a big underbite ;-)
The Wonder Boy series just far outshines the entire Adventure Island series as a whole. My favorite of the Adventure Island game is actually number IV that was never released here and actually took a more open RPG format like the Wonder Boy series.
very informative. of course wonder boy is better. it is the original, it has better graphics, more levels and unlimited continues. i got it for 500pts on the wii (and all the other wonder boy games too. adventure island is a cheap ugly clone. :P
hey renri i really like your reviews and i really like how you dont swear im 11 and i really want to get old nes games i really like you guys and if i could know youre address i could send u games to review
@ThePsychoCrusher89 Sega and Westone (Escape) had a weird arrangement after Westone devolped the game for Sega. Westone had the rights to the game concepts such as level design and Sega had rights to the characters and their names. It is for this reason that Westone could license the game for ports to other systems provided they had changes to the sprites and their names. For this reason Adventure Island is not a clone but a legit port of the exact same game...video game history wierdness!
This arrangement was a fairly common one at the time actually and was often used by developers to get around Nintendo's draconian "you're only allowed to develop games for our system" publishing prerequisite.
This just happens to be the most famous occurance, but Sega actually also did this for the sequel "Wonderboy In Monster Land" which was ported to the Neo-Geo and various other systems simply under the title "Monster land" or an alternate title.
@KurtlesDude I'm only familiar with the Turbografx ports, was there a Wonder Boy game that made it to the Neo under a weird name? Sega games showed up on a lot of systems back then, casting a big net like Hudson was doing back in the late eighties. They were putting out NES games even though the PC Engine was a hit in Japan. It's strange to think a company would do this but in the case of Sega not a lot of money was to be made out of Brazil and Europe. With Wonder Boy, Escape had to do the same.
Ive always wondered about both games for years and wasnt sure why they were so similar. Im glad to know that Wonder Boy is more true to the arcade version cause I was a Sega owner back then.
I agree that both of these are great games, great series even. Adventure Island got better as it went along and so did Wonderboy, but in regards to the first, I give my props to Wonderboy.
Both of these are great games, but while Wonder Boy does some things better. I still prefer Adventure Island, by virtue of it's vastly superior soundtrack. And also Master Higgins is a much cooler character.
@rinrygamegame If you ask me, I like Adventure Island, but I never noticed it until I checked the wiki. BTW, Master Higgins is actually Takahashi Meijin, who bacame the basis of this character. he's best known for his sharp-shotting button mashing.
I voted for Wonder Boy because I'm a Sega fanboy. HAHAHA!
Yeah, stupid reason but I'm not a fan of the first Wonder Boy. It's the sequels that I'm interested in. Adventure Island looks the same for the it's subsequent games so I'm leaning towards Wonder Boy all the way.
I'll admit I was reluctant to subscribe at first because cute girls, especially when it comes to gamers get a lot of subscribers because gamer guys are loney pathetic individuals and this is as close as they get to real women (talking from experience here)... but you're actually a real gamer, not just some cam-whore, and your videos are really quite good. Subbed. (PS: You're also very cute, but I'm sure you get that far too often).
Yea... I couldn't get into Adventure Island, but I love Adventure Island 2. I have played Wonder Boy in Monster Land, but only for a little bit, although it does seem to be a very awesome game.
Good review. Whilst the SMS version of Wonder Boy had more variety than Adventure Island and wasn't so difficult, I actually found it to be a little too easy to be enoyable and preferred the challenge of Adventure Island more. Plus also, the level layouts in Adventure Island are much closer to the original arcade version of Wonder Boy, so it's actually the better version in my honest opinion.
Wonder Boy was my favorite game (and series for that matter) on the SMS when I was a kid. I was aware of Adventure Island, but never really had the chance to play it. Needless to say, the SMS version definitely looks MUCH better.
I had Adventure Island as a kid, but never managed to beat it. I did a search on Wonder Boy because I was curious how it differed from Adventure Island. Thanks for the helpful video. ^^
Is Midnight Wanderers, from Three Wonders, anyway related to Wonderboy? My cousin and I used to think their gameplay was kind of similar (the weapons were similar, the way your character was respawned everytime he died, the use of a familiar/option, the very design had a similar theme to later instalments of wonder boy...) anyway, it's a game I recomend you to play (on MAME, he, he, it's REALY tough...), it has some really cool baroque graphics.
Adventure Island is hard and fun...the sequels were much better than the original. The second Gameboy Game I owned back in the day. Wonderboy looks better but it is for wimps in comparison.
Wonderboy on SMS was my first and still is my favorite game of all time. Although I was surprised to find an identical game on a NES with a different name awhile ago. Nevertheless both are great game, I prefer the wonderboy bgm though.
Sorry if this has already been answered a million times elsewhere in the comments, but where can I find that Adventure Island theme music that is played at the end of the video?
Very nice analysis! Especially the part where you mentioned how the 2 games that are essentially the same had spawned 2 different series with their sequels. I've always wondered about that cuz it used to always confuse me to what happened to the series, now it all makes sense...thanks!! :)
this two game are very hard but its strange that the same game apears in the 2 consoles and the first version was make by sega but in that time nintendo hates sega wow its a cool detail
I just got a master system a couple weeks ago, and while I always enjoyed wonderboy/adventure island. The sequels are where its at, Wonderboy II and III imo are two of the best platformers of all time! Its kinda like, zelda II done right xD
I got my first Wonder Boy game last year on my 15th birthday. Been my favorite series ever since. Might just start a fanfic on the Monster World series. I hope that the series gets a revival though.
Wonder Boy in Monster World... I had that one. Pretty fun. It's interesting that the same game branched off into two completely different series, I never knew it. Nice nugget of gaming knowledge.
I really enjoyed this video! ^__^ I played both games a lot in the past & enjoyed both thoroughly however I never realized that they were actually not the same. Very similar but not exact copies of each other...
On the sided note, by this review it's clear that out of both 8-bit consoles it was SMS that was far more advanced/powerfull even though it was NES that was a huge commercial success. Figures, it's what SEGA's known for... Being an epic failure. ^__^
One other thing is that Wonder Boy and Adventure Island had Next-Gen installments, The Genesis had Wonder Boy in Monster World, which had a blue-haired hero named Shion traveling through a different Monster World, while the game retains references to past Wonder Boy Games. SNES had SUPER Adventure Island 1 and 2, which are different games that starred Master Higgins. The first one plays like the NES games, and the second one is similar to Wonder Boy, where he wears armor. GEH?
I had a SMS when i was a child, but never played Wonder Boy, so i decided to play it now, and damn, it´s hard. I don´t know how to make he jumps that high.
I've never played either of these series, but have heard that Adventure Island is difficult. I think I'd try Wonder Boy first, if only because the sequel has RPG elements!
Gimme my pot man!! Sega consoles weren't really popular in my country so I didn't know Wonderboy when I was a kid,,, I just played Adventure Island and I wasted one entire day for beat that game... I just could reach level 8-2 and I had to turn off the console when my eyes started to bleed...
Ha ha I remember having this game. I used to take my master system to mexico as a kid because I would get bored. I got all my cousins hooked on wonder boy, but I was the only one to beat it. I later played Adventure Island but I liked the graphics and music from the sms more and that kept me from getting into the nes version. I ended up leaving my sms in mexico with my cousins. I'm going next month to mexico for a wedding. I gonna see if I can bring it back home.
hahaha yes! Bubbles!!! That was a funny comparison. Got to say to you two, great job on the videos! My favorite is Wonderboy as well, though Adventure Island 2 was really fun. Juuuulllliaaaaannnn!!!!
Hah! I had forgotten about the cursed eggplant that follows you. That reminds me of Kid Icarus! I LOVED that NES game, and it was rife with eggplant badness. Pity that the eggplant has gotten such a bad rap in games.
Holy ballz. My mind = blown at how many views/comments you are getting!! SO freakin' awesome guys!
And you deserve it! ~thumbs up~
This was a good vid. You guys are getting even better at adding in little visual effects to the vids, lie word bubbles and stuff. It's good stuff.
I feel like this would've been more interesting for me if I had played either of these games at some point...but I never have. Kind of cool to learn about them, regardless.
@D3stinySm4sher thats because she posted it to digg, et al, and has a pretty voice.
What i'm surprised about is that she didn't talk about Master Higgins origins: in japan, its "Famous Takahashi," and was one of the first game-celebrities, famed for his ability to hit buttons 16 times per second. Master Higgins supposedly vaguely resembles Takahashi.
Wow! I knew about these similarities ages ago, but like many of use here, only kept watching because you're voice is so great! Looking forward to another review!
i had adventure island growing up... and the instruction manual was full of all sorts of translation errors... one enemy was worth "loopts" which i think was supposed to mean 100 pts. LOL
My family has had the arcade cabinet for Wonder Boy for about twenty years. It's a fixture of our basement and everyone who comes over has to play it! I've always wondered why Adventure Island was such a rip-off of it, but when I would ask people, they would never have heard of Wonder Boy for comparison. Great video!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mother Of God. Could you possibly make a longer more outdated and meaningless review? 7:17?! I'm not sure these games got this much air time when they were new. Why is this on Digg? Some people should be banned from digging.

Wow, if that doesn't illustrate how much more technologically superior the Sega Master System was to the Famicom/NES, nothing does.
It's a shame the Mega-Drive/Genesis wasn't all that impressive under the hood compared to the Super Famicom/SNES.

Mother Of God. Could you possibly make a longer more outdated and meaningless review? 7:17?! I'm not sure these games got this much air time when they were new. Why is this on Digg? Some people should be banned from digging.

Love your vids rinry. You're one of the small handful of people who still make video game related content without pretending to rage at every little thing.

I was never a big fan of the first Adventure Island. It is a decent game, I just never found it that interesting.
Comparing the two, Wonder Boy seems to have brighter characters, and slightly better graphics.
Great video as always!

Speaking of weird the naming system, the Game Gear port of Wonder Boy is titled Revenge of Drancon even though its the exact same game.
