I actually learned both at the same time, sorta. Mostly alternating between frailing and three-finger, it kept me going. It was like playing two different instruments!
great videos, i just recently started playing banjo. and even more recently began playing the frailing style. i really prefer it, but right now im playing on an old harmony resotone from the 70's and the 5th string gets knocked out of tune often. i was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good frailing banjo, should i get an open back? bc i was previously lookin at a nice fender for 229.00
My banjo has been sitting in my basement for years and I kind of stopped playing it because I thought clawhammer was really limited and found bluegrass style frustrating, but now you've inspired me to pick it up again. Thanks for the inspiration! By the way, is that a Bart Reiter banjo? It sounds awesome even on YouTube!
This is sort of like playing on the "back beat" like so much 50's rock & roll. So, I guess you could extend this drive into rock & roll banjo or regae......
I've always loved the banjo since I was young, and finally at age 23 I was able to buy one. I have been trying Scruggs style, until I came upon frailing. It looked interesting to me but I wasn't able to find anywhere to learn, until now.
Your videos are amazing, and very inspiring ! I will definitely be coming back to your videos to learn frailing !
WOW! WOW! WOW! Thank you, Patrick. I'm a beginner & when I moved I lost my banjo teacher. There are NO teachers where I live - i've googled & cliff-noted & have been STUCK & :( ,,,,you just re-ignited all my hopes I am SO having fun...THANK YOU !!! Frailing has much possibility !! I can't wait to see more!
excellent, i started on bluegrass, too mechanical, saw your first, had to watch a few times, now i've taught 2 friend and another has just bought an openback, and i have just bought an openback (sounds great frailing) this video is great my next stage...VagaBanjo
Awsome. It's great to hear you stretch out and show off just a bit. You work hard to stay accessible to newbies like me, but it's inspiring to hear you rip!
im very greatful for all the help. please dont stop posting. i started playing drums in my church at the age of 14, the only problem is drums do not have a melody and they are ment as a backup instrument. i bought my first guitar christmas of 07, and bought a banjo about 3 months ago. ive never had a real lesson, but i love the way you teach. i wish you were in georgia. its hard to teach yourself something as intricate as the banjo. i do wish you would do a slow gospel song like amazing grace.
I am just constantly blown away at your enthusiasm. It still gives me a chuckle when I hear you say that you want us to be teachers. I am not sure about that ;-). But thanks a lot so far. You made me buy a Banjo and I have started hacking away .... I sound awful, but I start loving it.
Saw your video and had to subscribe! I'm taking fiddle and mandolin lessons and have tried to find a 5 sting banjo teacher but none are around here. This is good info. Keep up the good work.
Great work Patrick. I love the new slick, clean professional presentation, and better image quality too(?). Not that it wasnt those things before, but it just comes across better. Its always great to hear you play, I cant walk past the banjo after I listen, I have to pick it up!
Looking forward to the new changes this year. Best wishes.
thanks for this video, I've hit this frailing "plateau" as well, and it's encouraging when you tell us that everyone goes through this ! I was starting to wonder.. if it was just me !
Thanks for the great lessons and the great tips, and for making me discover this wonderful instrument !
Man, you can play that thing. Love watching your video's. I'm at that wall you're talking about "bump ditty bump ditty bump ditty" on and on and on and am starting to flag some, so it was good to know it happens. Many thank's.
Patrick, just today I was considering picking up my picks again, so this lesson was especially poignant for me. There are a few songs I play with the Jugadelics that do sound good with a simple roll, so I will not put them away for good. However, I will take your advice to heart.
Great overview lesson BTW. Looks professional with the white background, but is that what we want? Hmmm. Take it easy bud.
I have a eddy Finn soprano banjo uke that needs a setup. Do you guys do that? I'm in baltimore.

Every now and then, I return to this video. The part where he picks up pace, and plays with tunings and bluegrass always makes me very happy.
Awesome videos, helped me loads.

Great workshop. I'm a beginner frailing banjo style student, and playing with a Blue Grass jam, very helpful in keeping my style.

The "chop" is an upbeat version of the reggae upstrum on guitar, yes? Music is crazy and I love it. You're a good teacher as well. Thanks.

what is the easiest song to start with on the banjo?????
Dodosareawesomebirds 2 years ago
You want as simple a song as possible... try a two chord tune like Skip to my Lou. Great practice for both hands.

Ok, so, while this looks more "professional" setting, I still like the office setting better, seems more front-porch-folkier.
