I watched Matthews recieve his holy communion wafer today on live TV during the Hugh Carey funeral coverage. Since America's religious right is very well represented in Roman Catholicism, isn't his comment about them being terrorists rather self condemning? Does he really believe or was he only taking part in the mass because all his other high profile friends were doing it?
there's just too many similarities. the only difference is that Christian freaks live in a peaceful society. If Obama ever reveals himself to be a Muslim, all hell will break loose. LOL.
lets see, yes yes and yes, what is the difference if the bomb comes from an airplane than from a suicide bomber? oh and what about the torture at guantanamo, arresting iraqi civilians and they are never seen again, oh and the war in iraq and the occupation in afghanistan had nothing to do with bin laden it has to do with the religious right wanting to spread their ideology to other ploaces by force, but yeah the taliban is different, afterall they are on the defense arent they
@EstevanL how did they force religion on anyone at gitmo? they have arrows in every hall and cell pointing to mecca and get better meals then our troops
Chris Matthews and Ron "My daddy didn't spend enough time with me" Reagan strategy: If you don't like the answer, talk over them! Matthews and Reagan = OWNED
Don't forget that the bible was written in barbaric times, and if a politician wanted to re-establish slavery, they could simply take a verse out of the bible and recite it out of context. Both the righties and lefties, when reciting the bible, only read into what they want to read. If we allow that when it comes to our lawmaking systems, civil liberties would be down to shit and dissidence could be prohibited as ungodly.
I believe in God, but he needs to stay the hell out of our government.
The main reason why religion cannot play a role in the government is because a lot of people do not know what it means. Scripture is about as subjective as can be, why do you think there are so many denominations in a single faith? This means many members of the Religious Right don't know what they are talking about, as the bible condemns the ideals of letting the wealthy run free and actually condones the use of marijuana and shrooms (legalize!), something most Right Wingers don't realize.
The Religious Right has also stereotyped Islam and created further hatred of the Middle Eastern community. They have spawned worthless racial profiling and not recognized how intelligent many of our most wanted insurgents are. They have created misconceptions about the Middle East's role in the war, and networks like FOX news (largely backed by religious right) support bordering on extreme-xenophobia conspiracy theories about our current president, creating a state of fear which overrides logic.
The Taliban and the Religious Right both support the ideas of a theocracy, so yeah, they are comparable.
BTW, the Religious Right doesn't prohibit women from voting or cause problems before an election, but they have helped inspire people (both directly and indirectly) to bomb abortion clinics and attack federal buildings (Oklahoma City, anyone), along with helping inspire the murder of people like George Tiller (who cares if he was an abortionist? That does not make vengeance justified).
A xenophobic hatred for muslims and Arabs, blaming "a pact with the devil" for the Haiti earthquake, blaming 9/11 on gays, picketing soldier's funerals, blowing abortion clinics, killing doctors, the Texas school board indoctrinating their children by changing the public school curriculum...the only difference between the religious right and the Taliban is one of them exists in a safer and healthier environment. If the religious right existed in a civil war, poor state, theyd be just as radical
Of course. Because radical Muslims and Arabs dont deserve the hate they receive. I mean, whatever did they do to us? Its not like they attacked us in our own country and killed thousands of our own civilians, right?
Look, Im not saying all Muslims are bad, just the radical ones. We have good reason to hate and distrust them.
As for the rest of your argument: Yes, I disagree with the Religious Right. Yes, fundamental Christians have done stupid stuff. But picketing funerals and shooting a few abortion doctors pales in comparison to flying airplanes into buildings, blowing up buildings, beheading people, and sending suicide bombers into public places.
Comparing the Religious Right to the Taliban is like comparing apples to oranges. There are similarities, but in the end, they are not equal.
The difference between the two is one is an anti-imperalist revolutionary movement, similar to the leftist anti-imperialist movements during the cold war, and the other is an isolated rural group of subtle white supremacy using a tool of Christian values to maintain their grasp on a perceived diminishing societal dominance. If the Christian right were in a developing nation, they'd be just as violent. If islamic fundamentalists were in the US, they'd be more civilized.
No one is defending Islamic Fundamentalism except for Islamic Fundamentalists. But anti-Islamic fervor is disturbingly ignorant. Islamic Fundamentalism has killed no more then several thousand Americans. But American imperialism and wars have killed and dislodged millions of eastern Muslims. They don't hate us for our freedom, they hate us for our bombs.
matthews didnt say the religious right was the same as the taliban he said it was the most similar group in america to the taliban. religious fundamentalism. wanting to run a country based on a religious text. you know, that sort of thing
well you have to offer some reason for your wacky comment buddy, or you are just talking nonsense. you should at least compare the democrats to communists or socialists or something, not just stalins regime, that opens up a myriad of interpretations. i would rather you pick one and comment on it, one similarity that is, then i will come back and comment on your stupidity. thanks son
The pointlessness of the comment was the point... a point apparently lost on you. To make comparisons based on a single categorical similarity is absurd. I CAN compare the Democrat party to Stalin's concentration of power in the government. The "myriad of interpretations" is the problem with saying the religious right in this country is the closest thing we have to the Taliban. Its like saying Obama is like Hitler because Hitler smoked. You take one similarity and juxtapose any two things.
one point? a party or group such as the religious right, that believes the bible is the word of god and should be obeyed, and would hence make laws based on there chosen holy book, thereby creating a theocracy, is not one little point of similarity.
Then the Democrat party's penchant for the redistribution of wealth and collectivism a la Stalin is not a little point of similarity either. So if the religious right can be an American Taliban, the Democrat party can be an American Stalinist Party.
you could accuse the left of being closest to that mode of government in america, just as matthews suggested the religious right was the closest thing in american politics to the taliban. it was a pretty straight forward comment he made
well no he is clearly referring to political parties, groups of people who hold some sway over the nation. the religious right, at its far right of course, is essentially a fundamentalist christian theocracy. they want people to obey the laws of their religion, and punish those who don't. hence the comparison to the taliban. its really not as insane a comment as the bloke doing the video would like to pretend. quite rational really
I don't think that can be equated with a theocracy. Everyone has ideologies and they are going to want laws passed based upon those ideologies. So, just because they have ideologies based upon a holy book and the taliban also does, doesn't mean they are in anyway equivalent. Christians don't want to force women to cover their entire body, they don't want to kill everyone with a different religion, they don't want to suicide bomb anyone. I think it's insulting to equate the two
@owchywawa deosnt really matter what you think, if they are creating laws for a society from a holy book, its a theocracy. pretty simple son. and yes fundamentalist christian is the same as fundamentalist muslim! shock horror
The US religious right organize machine-gun armed militias w/violent aims to attack US army, US policeforce, US Gov. Their rhetoric is hateful. The religious right hate gay ppl, hate Muslims, hate everyone who's not a rightwinger. They hate progress! The religious right are sexist bigots. They're against a woman's right to choose. The religious right are racists & think they're superior to others. The religious right are as thick as two short planks.
I could give many more reasons why the Taliban is far worse than the Religious Right will ever be. But I believe flying airplanes into buildings, blowing up buildings in the name of Allah, and sending suicide bombers to marketplaces to blow up innocent civilians should suffice for any reasonable person.
Say what you want. Pat Robertson pales in comparison to Osama Bin Laden, period.
One murderer is no better/worse than any other murderer! Joe Stack flying a plane into a building-suicide mission! John Bedell shooting innnocent Pentagon officers-attempted murder & suicide mission! Jewish Museum nut who killed an innocent security guard. The psychopath who murdered a Doctor in a Church! The numerous rightwingnut attacks & murders of gay ppl & racist attacks & murders at the hands of rightwingnuts- in the name of 'God'!
So right-wing extremism = Christian terrorism? Sorry. Nice try.
Neither Stack nor Bedell were right-wing. Stack ranted against the evils of capitalism, and Bedell was a 9/11 truther and pothead. Both reek of left-wing lunacy.
As for the rest of your examples (or rather, circumstantial evidence), most werent done In the name of God, as is with Islamic terrorism. And the Religious Right had no connection to them, whereas the Taliban plots most of its terrorist attacks.
