I have had similar experiences with christian fundamentalists. Having been raised with those beliefs, I can fully support the author's position on the fundamentalists' disconect between the secular realities of ethical behavior, and a simple reward and punishment "moral" philosophy. The problem as I see it, with too much critical thinking, is that if you are in search of the truth, you can spend all your life debating, and then miss the whole point. Well, yes, very troubled people will often join a church or another type of group such as a political party. They don't resolve their problems. Other very troubled people just try to get on with life. But they too don't resolve their problems.

I have had similar experiences with christian fundamentalists. Having been raised with those beliefs, I can fully support the author's position on the fundamentalists' disconect between the secular realities of ethical behavior, and a simple reward and punishment "moral" philosophy. It's truly unfortunate that so many of them cannot be reached by reasoned discourse. Thank you Mr. Warner for a lucid, intelligent and reasoned presentation.

The problem as I see it, with too much critical thinking, is that if you are in search of the truth, you can spend all your life debating, and then miss the whole point. I think that Christians aren't too interested in debate , not 'cause we are afraid of being proved wrong, but I think because we see in the Bible the truth about Heaven and Hell. I really think that the "Born-Again" believer has avoided the unspeakable horror of hell, and by God's grace, tries to help others do the same.

I trust from your authoritative stance, that you have studied Christians in depth, and have visited many evangelical churches in your time in order to arrive at this OPINION. Very true, but you speak of the 'victim', the product of one's environment/society. It's the partial or full societal acceptance of his cult, that actually is the cause of his pathology. Should society in the main, reject such cults, fundamentalist victims are not then produced. Societal acceptance is driven greatly by ridicule. Ridicule of cult fairy tales, and those who profess them, ensures the disease that causes pathological fundo's, is diminished significantly. it's a societal problem.

I too have had similar experiences with friends.
I live in a town where the only friends i could get were fundamentalists. Which in high school was very hard because i had just moved from another place where all of my friends were the children of scientists and were all critical thinkers, To this day these people and my time there have a profound effect on me and my view of the overly religious, so you might understand how hard it was to be surrounded by bigotry.

One other point. I live in an area where fundamentalist religion is very common. Most of these people believe as they do, NOT because of mental problems, but because they've had this stuff pounded into their brins from infancy.
Their parents, their friends, their teachers and their clergy continue to reinforce religion throughout their lives and during their most impressionable years.
It is education that will eventually break this cycle. THAT is what we need to be promoting.

If they won't accept evolution, on which they could be EASILY educated, how could they be educated about what they are doing? sounds like my friend jeff. He's the nicest kid I have ever met. You would never know his parents had completely disowned him and kicked him on the street when he was 16 when they found out. Jeff is actually one of the lucky ones. He somehow was able to make it to California, where he met some great people who love him for who he is. 6 years later, deep down you can tell he still hurts, especially since he was very close with his grandmother, but he's doing much better than if he was still there

Well, yes, very troubled people will often join a church or another type of group such as a political party. They don't resolve their problems. Other very troubled people just try to get on with life. But they too don't resolve their problems.

Please don't think that all Christians of any denomination believe this way.

Yes he is a christian, he is a fundamentalist christian. I'm not sure he ever tried to suggest that all christians of any denomination are subject to these particular pathologies, although one could argue that many accepted christian denominations are the result of these types of psychological means of control (Catholicism, and Orthodox Christianity spring to mind).

If you think you're a Christian, then that's good enough for me. There are thousands of branches of Christianity, and not one of them are right, therefore either no one is a Christian or everyone who calls themselves a Christian is.
Since it would be useless to not classify anyone as a Christian, everyone is a Christian.

I am an atheist
1. I do not swear a lot, and I am definitely not bitter, although sometimes I can be cynical
2. I do have morals, and most of them revolve around being selfless, and trying to make the lives of those around you better.
3. Well if people insist on needing a purpose.. mine is that we should work to better the lives of the next generation. Whether that be advancing science or stopping global warming

The fear of self, of choices made by self, the fear of not knowing how to judge the right from wrong and the fear of not being able to succeed in life - most importantly the fear of DEATH is the source of all religious belief systems. However, all these fears are rational fears and can be ameliorated through proper education - which fundamentalist institutions like religion always avoid and deny.

I found it intriguing that your mind failed to see the words in my prayer. So, I asked valid questions to determine why, and you avoided answering. Next, I attempted a simple psychological test, and you reported that nothing happened, and avoided answering, yet again. Now, I learn that the only question you saw was "You really that stupid?" Which was apparently the intention of your rhetorical questions.
To be honest, this is somewhat frightening.
