hate to sound todd stupid , but was the otherside to real man? and i should know !love this albumn .hopeing wont do it ,the 7nth moon wont do it. was prana thee other side of that 45?
I had no idea this existed--and I didn't know that the entire Treatise was sped up, although that makes sense. Still, I love the Treatise as it is. Thanks for posting this!
Could you flip it over and play Real Man? I remember this mix to sound way different from the album. My sister bought it before Initiation was released which was the custom back then. The break (Some mens world is only hate and money) has a much heavier phase-shift on it, and the overall mix is more present as with Prana. Why don't they put these at the end of the Initiaion CD! Come on Todd!
@jagfug A reply to my own comment! - My prayers have been answered! This is coming out next month on the Japanese Victor Entertainment Label. Even the TR Connection doesn't know this. This 45 version and the A side Real Man, will be at the end of the disc. How cool it that? Hey frippstar47, didn't you read my comment? LOL! I answered your question before you asked it!
Todd Fans should always listen to EVERY song he made on his first five albums, not including his Utopia releases (but those are good, too). Those are critical to understanding the profound nature of Todd's music and why his musical peers think he is a genius.
Well, he certainly deserves it. Anybody who writes, produces, engineers, sings every note and plays every instrument on many of his recordings..(breath)...has certainly got my attention. And I have always been mesmerized by what he composes. It's just really different. I think he'll be studied and appreciated long after we're all gone.
@mojorisen74 At nearly 68 minutes it is the longest single-disc-vinyl pop album ever, longer than some two-LP sets even. The dynamic range had to be reduced in order for it to fit onto massed produced vinyl. I have the best recording of it so far, a remastered Japanese CD made in 2008. Even the cassette sounded better than the original vinyl, since the cassette didn't have to sacrifice quality.
I could never pick favorite Todd music, but there is just something about this, parts of Healing, and the "eyeball" record that just get right down to it...and I haven't drank or smoked weed or anything in years and years...it's just timeless, I guess. It's all good. Great. Soul music.
The first time I heard anything from INITIATION was on WMMS in Cleveland before the record was released. They played four songs that I recorded off the radio. To accomplish this live, they played REAL MAN from the 45, then DEATH OF ROCK AND ROLL from the LP. Next came PRANA from the 45. As the last violin strain plays out, it overlaps with INITIATION from the LP. Fantastic mix. Wish I still had the tape. MUCHO THANKS FOR THIS UPLOAD!
I'd love to know(if your familiar with Utopia's Oblivion album)the drum sound mostly the bass drum sound. Listen to that album and you'll know what I mean.
if the raised the pitch up they did so by speeding it up slightly so yeah they did spped it up in order to make it fit on the record. Back then records could hold only so much music time wise.
Thanks for posting the really interesting and cool Todd stuff! There doesnt seems to be a good version of 'Real Man' on youtube either right now by the way..(hint hint) :-)
This just might be my all time favorite piece of Todd music...after the middle "City In My Head" section of Utopia...I always wondered though why "The Death Of Rock & Roll" wasn't the B side to Real Man rather than Prana...
This was a song that in Oct. of 94 I played a lot, the CD version though while staring out my apartment window in San Francisco. I was only 20 at the time, I was on my own, maybe a little homesick. I'd drink King Cobra and smoke weed while listening to this, with my window open. Just a really good memory of that. Those little things you remember, this song was the soundtrack for that trip.
It's alot different actually. It's an entirely different mix with the guitars mixed louder, there's less reverb so the instruments sound solid and the pitch is half a step lower, That's how it was originally recorded. The pitch of "Treatise" had to be raised so all of it would fit onto one side of the album.
Thanks, mojo. This has been such an underrated piece of music by Todd, as well as the following instrumental...Fire of Mind. Both pieces were sort of lost because they were part of the whole notorious "second side" of Initiation. I didn't realize that "Prana" was the B side to Real Man, but I suppose that was Bearsville trying to sell Todd. As far as Prana goes, everyone I know who has listened to it thinks the guitar solo was speeded up or faked somehow. This proves them wrong. Many thanks.
Thanks for posting this. I used to have this 45 back in the day, but no longer. I wasn't aware that side two of Initiation was sped up to make it fit, but that is interesting as well. Too bad, perhaps, because this slower version has a nice groove to it. The whole "Treatise On Cosmic Fire" has always been a masterpiece to my ears. Thanks again for posting.
No problem. This version will probably never appear on CD so I figured I'd post it so everyone knew it existed. I've got a few other TR oddities I'll be putting up when I get time. Glad you enjoyed it!
A treatise on cosmic fire is a magical composition. In those days, he had a lots of it. Wizard and Todd are full of masterpieces, and then there is this one on initiation. The top three albums of Todds career in my opinion. The spark of life from "Todd" is one of my favourites

This is great, I kinda wonder what the LP sounds like, as even sped up, its 36 minutes or somthing - crammed onto a side.
jedw 2 years ago
The vinyl LP is very thin sounding. The Rhino CD sounds the best, find one if you can.....
