An ending in a political story where the beureocrats win makes the audience feel as if there is an oppressive presence still, driving them toward revolutionary actions as a way to solve this perceived threat to their wellbeing.
to Reverendsyn it was not a pessimistic ending more like realistic. Sam is not your hero material and this is not just another movie. This is a perfect example of the world we live in and have lived in . This isn't depressing just the opposite . It's enlightening and there isn't a day that goes by without something happening that reminds me of a scene in Brazil . See this movie as a lesson not just as another movie .
Just for fun: I'm a russian and about year before I got phone call from our MOI (so called "National Antiterroristic Сommittee"). He tried to recruit me to "fight" inet "terrorists". He do this by absolutely idiotic mistake, of course ("We don't make mistake"- yah) :)
The conversation was absolutely surrealitic - exactly in the Gilliamish-style.

Gilliam is a pessimist. You can tell by his refusal to give a happy ending to this movie.
The logical ending should have Sam get the girl and become the hero he always dreamed of by starting a revolt to overthrow the oppressive government alongside Harry Tuttle. Showing Love conquers all and good triumphs over evil.
But all we get is the hero ends up another insignificant bug squashed by the system still in power. Too bleak and pessimistic, thats not how movies are supposed to end.
One of the brilliant things about this movie *is* that it isn't another mushy, lovey-dovey "happy ending." Sometimes, in life, there aren't happy endings, that certainly was the case in the society Gilliam created.

Absolutely. This movie was really ahead of its time. It even has references to medical gift tokens that spoof the current health care crisis.

I hope the world dosen't end up like this, Terry Gilliam seems to know what he's talking about.
