Please call her a locomotive or steam engin. Poor old Sir Nigel would have had a duck fit if he could have heard you call her a train. They are the coaches, or wagons pulled by her.
This is still the fastest steam train ever i saw it at the NRM i could'nt help it i just had to touch it its one of the most iconic and most loved trains ever made and my most favourite train ever
My grandfather Drove the flying scotsman back in the 40 and 50s after the war before he came here with my dads family to the US. Hes got Alziehmers now but ill he can remember is that damn train.
A great video - ruined by that InterCity liveried coach slap bang in the middle! (I guess it probably wouldn't be allowed to run without some BR stock?!).
yea but to be fair the mallard was one hell of a machine. I can see why pople like tha...ohoh. I just clicked on his profile..trains all over it. I cant defend that. No your right. 1)thats as u say sad 2) i bet his name is Maclome, Norman, Or fred. Poss even a t'v called Janet. Trainspotters oftrn have a short life because many get run over by the trains because they are too busy writing down pointless numbers instead of lookng where they are walking. They aslo get dumed by gilfrnds and wives
MMM. I guess that was a bit mean. I can't remember doing that comment. Looking at the spelling it was prob 3 am when i fell in through the front door pissed.
I don't think the NRM will steam Mallard again - they did a temp job in 1986 to run for a coulpe of years, but too much would need replacing. Same is true of most of the other engines in the collection - not really preserving them if they get overhauled with new parts is it?
If we judged a loco by what was "original" - Flying Scotsman for example would have been history years ago! There's sure not much left of the "original" loco - Mallard also but to a lesser extent.
The NRM have got Duchess of Hamilton to think about 1st when ( any week now ) she emerges from Tyseley complete with her full streamlined casing. Now the sight of the 2 of them side by side would be truly amazing.
The 70th aniversary of that record is coming up in a couple of weeks time. Look at the NRM website for more details, there is a very special event taking place!!
I stopped on this day with my parents on the way to Appleton Roebuck, we wondered what all the people were waiting for, someone mentioned a steam train was coming and we did'nt know which one till it arrived, we were expecting nothing much and weren't we pleased to see Mallard when she thundered by!!!!
Fantistic footage. It is a crime that National Rail Museum won't let this stunning engine out. Surely they could build a replica or take the ones the yanks and canadians have pinched?
yes it is very sad that the NRM have still not got the message that we all want to see these museum pieces out on the mainline (Even if only maybe once a year). They have some of the most amazing and famous locomotives in the world on display but have no intention of ever letting anyone get them out running, that is very sad. Yes I'm a deltic person but I still think that this is a magnificent machine that we need to see working.
its not that they wont let her out its more the fact she cant steam at the moment and it would probably go outside their budget to have her fixed the do let trains out why do you think they are fixing the scotsman which i myself have seen twice
@ricspeed1971 Umm no, definately not. 60008 was I believe presented as a gift to the US, I just did a very quick google search, and it's far from destroyed! Shame it can't be steamed up though...

Great speed, great technics.
Well, USSR's loco manufacturers were well-advanced to build speed steam locos. But our steam age was suddenly interrupted in 1957 by Khrushchev...
