Although I agree with the video and I am on your side in this argument I find the comment "I have tenure" pretty boastful and downright arrogant. It perpetuates the false idea that job security is ensured but as we all know, education insitutions have been known to even let go of their tenure faculty. Yes, it's a tangental and minor point but still something to consider for those of you considering saying such a thing to a student.
I don’t understand why you had to include the comment that continues the stereo-typing of community colleges and their students. Community colleges are often the only means for individuals from working class families, such as myself, to have an opportunity to attend college. However, that gripe aside, now that I am teaching, I have heard everyone of these excuses, so I can relate to the overall gist of the video.
This is so true - check out my group Student Excuses on Facebook - real excuses sent to teachers from real students (names have been changed) - ask to join if you like to laugh....
The jabs at Glenn Beck and tea party are insane. The product of our lib ed would never hear of them.
As a tutor I had one student come to me and say, "I played the whole semester and now finals are coming and I'm afraid I'll fail." I tried to teach her basic calculus for 1 hour that I had, then scheduled the next appointment, but when she didn't come, I said that's it.
I think there's no better way to teach such students than to let them fail. They either smarten up, or become failures, which they would've become anyway. But that's a conservative approach.
@Kurtlane I agree with you 100%, but unfortunately, in today's educational system that is not a popular idea. It was because of idiots like this student that I retired in 2005 from teaching and have become increasingly convinced since that day that I made the right decision.

This is hilarious, because it happens all of the time. I would love to talk to my students like this.
