Um, I'm American and I've been living in Australia for over three years, and it just sort of creeps in. You start using the dialect because that's what everybody understands, and you get so used to hearing the sounds of the words, that it comes off as sort of a weird hybrid of accents. It's not on purpose.

Also, if you have already adapted certain accents, like I have for instance - it is so difficult to talk in an American accent if you are talking to someone with an Aussie accent, you just slip right back to talking in Aussie. Just an observation, people surprisingly flip more if you put on an English accent than when you talk American. It's a puzzle for me when people don't care when I talk in American and suddenly give a weird look when I put on an Aussie accent. Why?

Why is it such a big deal if Madonna puts on a British accent? You pick up accents, people. And for someone who lived in the UK for an amount of time, surely she can talk the way the locals do. I'm Filipino and we're known to adapt accents quite easily than most of our Asian neighbors. I have lived in Australia for 2 years (got the accent), Canada for 4 (got the accent) and US for another 4 (still got the accent) so why ostracize her? I think the most critical ones haven't left their hometown.
