ACCORDING TO THICKS, JAMES CONNOLLY WAS IRISH (IF YOU DON'T MIND)>
he was not. the great man was an INTERNATIONALIST from the State of Scotland. Just because his mammy or granny was from ireland does NOT make him irish. If so, why is LORD KICHENER not called Irish? Or the duke of wellington? CONNOLLY WAS SCOTTISH. WHY TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THE MAN WHO, LIKE JESUS, GAVE HIS LIFE FOR PEOPLE????? he certainly wasted his time with we Southern Irish, didn't he? DON'T SAY HE DIDNT.

hate to point out the obvious, but Jim Connolly was a son of Edinburgh, & a Martyr for Ireland! Why deny him his birth right now? He was a Scot? Proud & clear!
He was born in Edinburgh, his da' came from Monaghan. There's a plaque on the actual house in Edinburgh's Cowgate area where he was born. His first job after leaving the army was with the Scottish Socialist Union, where he worked with the Clyde shipyard workers.
Accounts by folk who heard him give speches, describe his "booming voice & strong Scots brogue"!
He had a life before 1916.
As for the census, he was technically AWOL from the army, so maybe a bit of cover.

This is the most idiotic song, written about James Connolly.
Connolly was a marxist revolutionary, fighting for a worker's republic and an international socialist revolution! But this song tries to make a romantical, patriotic "irish soldier".
James Connolly was a great rebel, this song is great but should have included a socialist verse. James Connolly was fighting for a socialist republic. Unfortunately Fianna Fail is turning this country to a capitalist society and bringing imperialism back this is not what he was fighting for.
In 1969 I was working in Ireland for a few years and when I went back to Holland I brought some music of Johnny McEvoy with me and I still love it !! He is great !!

@DonegalRaymie201, Connolly's census returns of 1901 and 1911 have Monaghan, Ireland as his place of birth. He filled the forms.

@carluketim
The Irish Volunteers have ALWAYS been called 'Volunteers' and never soldiers! Although the general scheme and organization of the
Irish Volunteers shows them to be a purely
military force, modelled upon accepted military
lines. Their objectives were "to secure and maintain the rights and liberties common to the whole people of Ireland."
Óglaigh na hÉireann (IRA) didn't officially come into existence until January of 1919
GlasgowCeltic88 2 years ago
johnny ruined this song. they were not volunteers, they were soldiers of the proclaimed Irish republic.IRA

I hate this song. It tries to make a first of all patriot out of james connolly.
But connolly always fought against bourgeois nationalism and against the capitalist system, may it be settled in britain, ireland or elsewhere.
He always saw the liberation of ireland as a necessary part of the socialist workers revolution in ireland, britain and all over the world!
For a worldwide socialist revolution!
