Has anyone ever met a girl who likes XTC? No? Me neither! My ex-girlfriend was baffled by my interest in them. I went to see Brian Wilson once and it was a similar story. Lots of male fans, maybe occasionally bringing their bored wives and girlfriends along who would suddenly get excited when 'Surfin USA' or 'I get Around' were played. XTC never had a 'Surfin USA' or 'I Get Around' which may have been a good thing. They clearly had more to tell the world than how many girls they'd slept with.
@TheScriabin I am girl a black girl well woman, I am mid forties and I grew up listening to this music. I know all about Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds and Smile, P.F. Sloan and so on but I did grow up in a music family my uncle luther rabb was childhood friends with Hendrix they had their first band together, Luther was in Santana War and his own band, other relatives worked with Miles Davis and Parliamanent and there are many women that know this music maybe it is your choice of girls?
@kimrabb I did notice a lack of female messagers on the youtube XTC pages. I'm happy to see I was wrong. I'm not especially worried about finding a girlfriend who likes them though, that wasn't my point! Although now you mention it that would be kind of cool.
@TheScriabin Funnily enough I haven't either, but most girls I've met and introduced to XTC have said 'oh they sound pretty good.' Maybe XTC aren't a 'sexy' band for the girls, a bit like Status Quo in that respect.
This whole album is magical. I own nearly every album that XTC ever made and what is amazing is the variety and imagination over the years - the creative genius of 30+ years.
First exposure to XTC - local college radio station WRAS (Album88) played Generals and Majors - late 70s when I was still in high school. The only way to hear the import music before MTV was to listen to college radio.
I can't believe I found this.. My dad had this album and he would always play it when we rode in the car when I was like 5. I loved this song so much, and I still do! :D
What's great about pop, rock 'n roll is that it includes all kinds of music. Look what the Beatles did. What musical genre didn't they cover. With pop, rock 'n roll the sky's the limit.
These guys are the epitome of musical geniuses if you ask me. Notwithstanding their lyrical prowess, if you study the musical aspect--harmony, modulation, phrasing, etc--and analyze it from it pop music approach, you kind of get this vibe that the syncopated phrases and atonal melodies have no business in traditional pop music; however, if you have the ability to see the "big picture", XTC's music makes all the sense in the world!
Ahhhh! Haven´t heard this album for years..... forgot how brilliant it is! Thanks so much for reminding me! XTC rules! You must be quite a fan yourself! ;o)
Yeah. I also enjoy calling people stupid who don't like certain bands. It's fun. Somehow they were never big in America. I'll say this: They sound like the Beatles and Yes were banging and this popped out. By the way, imagine Ringo banging Jon Anderson. It's a great visual...poor Jon.
@reivenlocke You are too kind. Seriously, the subjective nature of music is one thing, but come on, when song after song is positively spilling over with brilliant pop hooks and incredible lyrics . . .
Where was the British music press with these guys? Here was your new Beatles, the band you've always dreamed of, the kind of band you've laid every King of Brit-Pop crown on, from The Kinks to The Jam to Blur to Oasis to the Arctic Monkeys. And yet you largely ignored XTC.
um-bi-LYE-cle....haha, love that.
