I was working as a sculptor on the restoration of Das Detschen Eck in for Koblenz. in our studios in Duesseldorf. Philippe, a french scupltor, played thus all the time. Have loved it ever since, what a rich textured voice. thanks for the upload.
You may want to check out Welsh Contralto Hillary Summers rendition of He was Despised.. Her voice is featured in the Lord of the Ring trilogy. I thought it was a counter-tenor.
I agree with SuperJohnnykay. This IS the rarest voice type, and when it appears, it's stunning. From the earth, poignant, powerful, and unearthly at the same time. Nathalie Stutzmann, Kathleen Ferrier , Eula Beal and Maureen Forrester have it, Ewa Podles has qualities like it, and the others do not, though they are contraltos (Delphine Galou, Sara Mingardo, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, etc). Such a magnificent voice type and so few to relish these days.
She gives back to Jesus the Creator the musicao genius and the voice He blessed her with. A man of sorrow indeed He was and so despised.

This is a beautiful recording. Kathleen has somehow become a baritone and counter-tenor with a womans' tone. Unbelievable.
