I'm not an expert but today, searching for different versions of this prelude as I started to study it yesterday (17 years since I last played piano :\ ), I noticed that almost everybody play it somewhat fast. I must say I prefer it slow as it is here (but yes, there might be a little too much rubato), because I don't think it ruins the melody. I feel this prelude is really paced on a melancholic heartbeat and has something odd and obscure in it, ermetic, distant, misterious in a way.
@yesplease91 I completely disagree. This piece is assai lento, and it is obviously meant to be played in a very somber, sad, emotional tone (much like a lot of Chopin's music). I think this is probably the best interpretation of this piece that i have heard. Besides, Chopin never wanted his pieces to be played exactly the way they were originally written/played anyways which is also one of the basic elements of the romantic period.
I like Pogo's slower tempo (he's probably the slowest of all), but some of his accented notes seem clumsy and inorganic, for example the fifth note in the LH melody he accents heavily.
I like it, because its different.
Yes there are better versions of course

This performance sounds dead to me. The melody is lost.

Chopin - Chopin= this.
Thanks for uploading, though.

I know it's lento assai but this is really too stretched. I think Rubinstein's version is much better.

demasiado rubateado... se pierde el ritmo.

I like the tempo, but over use of Rubato. Too much Rubato, just because its slow that doesn't shout rubato every measure.

I wonder if there is something such as horrible as this interpretation. its a beautiful prelude, and he ruined it.

you don't have to cope with it... it's personal

I think he´s absolutely excellent in Scarlatti, in chopin I don´t really know...

Or WAS excellent in Scarlatti. I don't think he plays much anymore. He was big in the 80's then he disappeared.
