@jetplane2006 totp is always mimed, but sometimes they rerecord the music to the song beforehand and have the singer sing on top of it to make it sound a little more live. Why not just have it live? I guess because otherwise we wouldn't have a bunch of goofy videos like this. At least it sounds different/cool.

I've been watching Page and Plant 'four sticks' on Jools Holland 'Later'. MUCH better than the original recorded version. I reckon U2 should have a crack at re-recording this, coz it rocks awesome but sounds a bit dated. A more polished 2010 version would sell like hot cakes.

About Bono's vocals:He didn't truly start singing until The Unforgettable Fire. Before that album it was more of a yelling or something. Compare this performance and the one from the Joshua Tree Paris DVD. The other one is much better. And yep, his voice has changed, maybe it used to be better, but have you tried singing Breathe? I couldn't catch my breath after 10 seconds when I went to see them while he didn't seem to have any trouble at all.Amazing
