The pentatonic scales sounds "good" with almost any set of chord progressions with some variation. It is described as "being trapped in the box" and gets very boring very fast. Everything ends up sounding exactly the same.

I didn't say that. The guy before me did. I'm just saying it shows a certain lack of creativity. It may come off to others as "sucking" because it takes little skill. I wouldn't go as far as to say that person is an idiot for play just pentatonic runs, because memorizing the different patterns takes some skill. But, I wouldn't limit myself just to pentatonic. You should explore all other modes and scales.

Actually, Petrucci uses his pinky a lot. This is a blues lick and he uses his ring finger instead because he is doing a lot of bending. You should try to use your pinky MORE.
