My only complaint about his solos is that they always seem to be buried in the mix. Maybe it's just a YouTube thing. I find it tough to hear them clearly. His chops are stellar, I know from experience that it's hard to play as fast on the bass as he does here.
I'm not sure about it being a youtube thing. On a ton of their albums (and even more so recently) poor John is CONSTANTLY buried under the mix. Maybe the rest of the band is jealous ;o
I enjoy the musicianship of Dreamtheater. I don't play bass, but this video shows the viewer that Myung plays each note on purpose or for a reason: meaning that it's not because his finger slipped off the string and hit another fret, but by luck sounded good. No, quite the contrary, he played that note intentionally. That's why I enjoyed listening and seeing this video.
Yup! John is korean.. both of his parents are korean, but he was raised in the U.S. from his youth.. he isnt fluent in korean.. however he plays crazy..
I prefer his cool riffs, much better than his solos! Just like this one, they're mostly scale wankin' as fast has he can play - but no real melodic content or any interesting ideas. I'm not saying I can do better, because his technique is far better than mine will ever be, but I think his solos are boring to watch (unless you like speed just for the sake of it). This particular clip is from the "Images & Words - Live in Tokyo" home video/DVD by the way, which is awesome!
Listen to the Moon Bubbles bootleg solo between him and John Petrucci. It is incredible.

I agree to the speaker above :). He is not a solo kinda bassplayer, at least not when it comes to fast parts.

killtheanimosity 5 years ago
this bass has six strings, but john can play the chapman stick with 12 strings too...
However the live was recordered in tokio on 1993; the song is called Ytse Jam,....
ah, the instrument is a bass "Ampere"...
