  • are you playing heel up or heel down?

  • I needs endorsements from head and shoulders! wtf its flowing nigga

  • Is he having an ANURISM !!!!

  • Пиздец О_О

  • seriously... I could listen to him play all day

  • I wonder if he's worked with the book 'Rhythmic Illusions' before? I just got it, and the ideas it presents are VERY interesting! :D

  • BEHOLD JUDAS! lol

  • Now I'm no professional drummer, but I thought I could hear for a short second in his solo where his feet weren't just right (unless I'm missing something). Everything else sounded very, very good. :)

  • Check out a drummer named Krimh. drummer of decapitated; not many drummers can replace Vitek :(

  • It seems like he's using heel-toe... am I wrong?

  • @ChronoGXay looked like double strokes to me

  • @MrKilltastic - Ok. :D

  • @MrKilltastic - I'm a little confused by your comment. haha Isn't heel-toe a double-stroke technique?

  • @ChronoGXay lol i was saying that in agreement

  • @MrKilltastic - Oh. haha Ok. :) I couldn't pick out your inflection.

  • @ChronoGXay Actually, he's using single strokes. If you notice, he blasts with one foot, and doing that with a double stroke technique would be problematic...

  • @ryder187mac - Haha, I know there are parts where he's blasting with one foot. However, you tell there are parts in his solo where he's using double strokes rolls on both feet, right? :) Those are the parts we're talking about. (correct me if I'm not remembering accurately, MrKilltastic.)

  • @ChronoGXay Nah, Roddy doesn't use double stokes, at least not in regular playing. He does practice them, but at the time when these videos were recorded, I doubt he did.

  • @ryder187mac - Watch his knees--in particular, his left knee--moving up and down in an alternating fashion from 1:33~2:10, at while time he's playing doubles slowly enough to where it would be comfortable to play them as single strokes. It's pretty obvious. -_-

  • @ryder187mac - Watch his knees--in particular, his left knee--moving up and down in an alternating fashion from 1:33~2:10, at about 2:12 he's playing double strokes slowly enough to where it's comfortable enough for him and he decides to switch back to single strokes for the even slower tempi. It's pretty obvious. -_-

  • @ryder187mac - Watch his knees--in particular, his left knee--moving up and down in an alternating fashion from 1:33~2:10. At about 2:12, as he continues through the decelerando, he's playing double strokes slowly enough to where it's comfortable enough for him and he decides to switch back to single strokes (or else the double strokes would start to sound awkward- and, if you're paying attention, they start to flam a little right before he switches back to singles). It's pretty obvious. -_-

  • @ChronoGXay Mate :) You're going to tell me about Derek? You're looking at his left knee, look at his right? The only reason his right knee is moving the way it is (which is, from side to side if you take a look) is because at that time Roddy used to swivel his ankle playing single strokes, and in fact Kollias got the swivel motion from reading an article by Roddy. Roddy however stopped using it, and Kollias got famous for it now (not bashing Kollias, he's a beast)

  • @ryder187mac - I'm a little confused by your punctuation. Unless the video's horizontal axis is inverted (for some reason), I've been looking at both knees as best I can. There are times when I see both of his feet moving in an alternating up/down fashion (the up/down movement of his left(?) leg being a little more pronounced because he's probably better with his right; maybe it's just the camera angle), but I'm hearing twice as many notes. That is why I'm thinking he might be using heel-toe.

  • @ChronoGXay He wasn't using heel-toe, if you don't understand what I'm saying, just trust me on that one ;)

  • @ChronoGXay I don't think he's using heel-toe, I'm pretty sure he's just using flatfoot single strokes. The motion of the leg is not really directly related to the strokes being played, because most or all of the motion comes from the ankle and calf muscles. He might be moving his thighs up and down at half the speed he's playing because it makes it more comfortable for him. Many players do that with their hands, also.

  • Isn't 2:20 the intro to "Behold Judas" by Hate Eternal?

  • 3:08 masturbating the war god by nile :D

  • this guy has too many cymbals

  • Derek has great form and power

  • i wonder what hes listenting to

or is that just his power adapter?

    =o

  • Whoooooooooooo's youuuuuuuuuuuuuuur daaaaaaaaaddyyyyyyyy!!!!

  • Derek is a god

  • chuck norris's long-lost son: DEREK R. NORRIS!

  • I was watching his hair all the time. They are amazing ! I wonder what kind of shampoo he uses ?

  • im waiting for the lesson part

  • esse cara é duente, maluco

  • i didnt know meinl had a novo china

  • @venomxhbk it seems it's an old video. He used to be endorsed by Paiste.

Actually, he changed from Sonor to DW.

  • Cool fills

  • dude, you are technically there.

however, the musicianship in your drumming is lacking IMHO. IMHO, i believe you would do well to leave the speed behind for a while, dive into the blues and rediscover your inner musician that lives on emotion. You are showing some cool shit here, but where in the world would you use it? Your speed, my ear, damn we would be good!

  • Got nothing on Pickles...

  • i hate people do not know seriously about music and compare joey jordison and lars ulrich to every posible drummer on the genre of each, guys i like metallica and slipknot for me both are awesome bands for me exists good and bad music no matter the style of music, but to be honest you must stop comparing this one to that one life is not a competition with other people but with ourselves and comparing lars and joey to the really good ones lol is even more ironic

  • FUCK JOEY JORDISON

  • @lliggrawde obviously you don't know what you're talking about, because he is faaaaaaaar to be the best, or even one the best, or even very good.

  • @lliggrawde

No, he's not. Mike Portnoy, Thomas Pridgen, Derek Roddy, John Bonham and Gene Krupa are the best

  • Goddammit what in the hell is it to everybody in dissing on joey and almost every drummer. can you all just have respect that they can drum and that their following their dream in playing music shit! they all started low and poor like you and me. so please stop being a bunch of assclowns and just respect that they've made it that far in life and still do what they love doing in life which is to play music.

Derek Roddy your fucking EPIC!! :)

  • joey is a great drummer and my favorite. but i know there is better drummers out there and i dont just listen to slipknot, branch out to other bands and you find out how to drum. just my thoughts

  • Joey jordison is a fucking faggot. first off, he plays for slipknot...enough said... and also anyone could be as good as him with the hook ups he has, the kit he has, the money, and a years training.

  • @airparticlelover years of training is all he had

money and kit dont make you a better drummer

  • lots and lots of china

  • OMG!! He's gonna smash the drums!! COOOOL!!

  • The toms sounds amazing, I nedd them!

  • need*

  • @Blacklorigine

they are through mics.... not the toms... :D

  • Groso! Go Derek!!!!

  • triggers make the sound clean, no more, don't make your feet moving faster.

  • @Blacklorigine not true. i agree triggers can give you a consistent tone. but i know of many metal drummers that set the trigger so sensitive that if you fart on them they trigger. so if you dont have to put the effort into the pedal, in my opinion, you are cheating. dont get me wrong, i appreciate the talent all the same.

  • Yes, we'll say, triggers are cheating only if you can't play without them, ok?

  • so if triggers are cheating by amplifying the sound, electric guitars with amps are cheating

  • dont be a knob. think about it. some guys set the triggers so sensitive you could fart on em and they'd go off. hoglan, lombardo, benante dont trigger, at least not like this.

  • they still have to hit the drum that fast. so its still technically not cheating, although i dont have much respect for people that do that.

  • hoglan does trigger....a lot. but it doesnt make his drumming less impressive

  • @DreamTheater4life - yeah but a good guitarist does not rely on the amp to sound good, they can make a good sound on acoustic too. Better drummers do not rely on triggers to sound good.

Argh!, I got sucked into a pointless discussion...

  • @DreamTheater4life So why then is it more difficult to play at faster speeds without triggers? A microphone amplifies the sound while triggers pick up registered notes and turn them into sound. Derrek Roddy said himself that he was trying to move away from triggers. With triggers, all you do is exchange dynamics for speed. Personally, I think either method is acceptable depending on the sound you want, but the truth is that triggers make it easier to go faster and be heard.

  • @karstd right. but if you use mics, you can play softer and if you make a mistake it's harder to hear. triggers cut right through at one volume so if you mess up, everyone hears it

  • @karstd Derek himself has said that for speed a mic does not provide enough consistency. There is just to much air moving through the drum. Triggers make the hits consistent volumes. It doesn't make it easier to go faster. If someone is playing 250 bpms with mics, it is the exact same as someone playing 250 bpms with triggers. The only thing that is different is the sound.

  • @DeathmetalAxis If a person is playing 250 bpms with triggers, it doesn't matter how hard they hit the drum, it will sound good. without triggers, if you just tap it lightly, it won't make a good sound. It is easier to tap lightly than to hit hard. Case closed.

  • @karstd Yes that is true. But you still have to have the right technique. You can't just go and tap. It does take practice to get it tight. Playing with triggers if you make a mistake it is easier to hear than if you were using a mic. So in a way yes it is easier and then no its not. Triggers do not make you faster, how you play does.

  • @DeathmetalAxis - I've heard of and seen online some mics that attach to the drum shell and pick up the vibrations of the shell itself. :-/ I wonder what he might think of those?

  • @DreamTheater4life no, drums are supposed to be loud by themselves, and amplifying a guitar doesn't make it very much easier to play, like triggers can.

  • @ItalianAvalanche Something tells me that you have never played 16th notes at 200bpm+ on the bass drum before.

  • @ACardFan no, I haven't, but it's very difficult without triggers. That doesn't mean I'm not a talented drummer, don't judge me until you hear me play.

  • @ItalianAvalanche The difficulty is exactly the same with triggers. A trigger is a little rectangle shaped thing that goes on your bass drum that picks up vibrations. It does not affect your pedal in any way. However, once you play about 200bpm+, regardless of how talented you are, the individual hits begin to resonate together and it sounds like a big jumbled mess. It's simply acoustics.

  • @ACardFan I find that a lot of drummers who use triggers end up placing their beaters extremely close to the head, to the point that it's barely audible without the triggers. They end up relying entirely on the trigger for their bass drums. THAT is my qualm with triggers.

  • @ItalianAvalanche I suppose that's a valid concern. But your qualm should be with people who abuse trigger use, and not triggers themselves.

  • @ACardFan Haha I can live with that. Good debate!

  • @ItalianAvalanche Definitely. They sure are hard to find among YouTube.

  • @sparkles67 yes but if that is so sensitive you have to put even more work into being more clean, triggers make it easier to go fast but make it harder to hide your missed base hits you have to be clean to use triggers if you aren't everyone will hear every little mistake you make.

  • It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

  • Damn, he impresses me each time.

  • yeah, phenomenal control and endurance, but not incredibly inventive.

  • up to 1:13 he plays "Swarm Of The Formless" by Spawn of Possession

    haha^^

  • great drummer!! for sure... but i think he uses a little bit to much the cymbals.... but great!! 5*

  • Joey is a kid, Derek is a drummer.

  • @Blacklorigine No, there are 'drummers' like Joey Jordison. And then you have 'Derek Roddy'. Nuff said.

  • @Blacklorigine A kid with serious talent though.

  • omg your fast

  • Hey this is a derek roddy video not joey jordinson so i dont no why ur talking about him

  • all i can say is 'pickles the drummer, doodily doo, ding dong doodily doodily do." fuck yeah!

  • derek, you're cool.

  • I am so sick and tired of everybody comparing Joey Jordison to every drummer out there. Slipknot is not a death metal band. Joey does not have blast his way throught every song, Don't get me wrong Derek is an amazing drummer for the syle of drumming that he plays. But seriously quit comparing Joey to every metal drummer your hear.

  • Stop comparing him to every drummer, basically

  • Agreed

  • Derek is amazing at any style he plays from what I know, but yes,Enough with joey

  • @Bigb116 Word the fuck up. Shove that Slipshit up your fucking ass. TH!S. !S. DRUMM!NG. With no shame. Fucking clowns. They're the ICP of fucking rapmetal. Motherfucking garbage.

MMWCL huhuh. Derek Roddy fucking blasts.

  • @Bigb116 exactly. he isnt even that good..

  • @Bigb116 Joey can suck Shit... and thats all.

  • @Bigb116 dude thank you, thank you, thank you, i am so fucking sick of people always compairing joey to every metal/deathmetal drummer out there, people seem to forget slipknot is one of the biggest band that ever walked the face of the earth!!!

    Derek is fucking amazing too

  • @Bigb116 Blasting your way through a song isn't a bad thing either. It shows technique and endurance... Plus, Derek doesn't even do that in every song.

  • @Bigb116 I think comparing Derek Roddy to George Kollias, Gene Hoglan, or Romain Goulon is a little more fair, isnt it? Im not by any means as good or as fast as any of these guys but I do pay attention to the extreme metal drummers and Joey Jordison isnt anywhere near them as far as I am concerned. What about guys like Sam Applebaum from Veil of Maya? What is with these fags that only listen to Joey Jordison and think he is the best metal drummer? Hes good, but certainly not the best.

  • @Bigb116 agreed joey isnt even that good to begin with yah hes not garbage but hes nothing compared to these guys like derek roddy and tim yueng

  • OH so thisss is how you practice speed and endurance ive been doing it wrong this whole time. ive got it now though.

  • so when does the lesson start

it was amazing i wanna be able to play

  • Tom sound is perfect OO

  • this is unbelivable!!

  • my favortie metal drummer are derek roddy george kollias and joey j but i beleive george is way better then joey and so is derek. for metal that is

  • Joey sucks...

  • ¬¬

  • Beatsly man. Im guessing your into metal? Rock?

  • Lets all play Behold Judas together!

  • Please don't mention Joey in one of Dereks videos ...

  • i agree completely!! do not even think of that douche during one of dereks video's!!!

  • gene hoglan is the best metal drummer i have heard...but i play guitar so i dont usually pay a lot of attention to the drums...scott travis is good too

  • hes fucking insane, bt i fink he uses 2 many cymbals

  • meinl say him use as much cymbaly as u can and so on and make clear that the viewers can see that they are from meinl ... you get more children more money for makeing advertidement for us ... its just marketing ... u understand ?? every good drummer get the things he uses for free in mass ... if you have the money to buy it all .. you get it for free !!! stupid world.. its so !

  • Got some "Behold Judas" in the end there, lol.

  • i lol'd

  • you have no idea how ignorant you sound, Chris Adler has said himself that roddy is better and if you had ears you could hear it if you listened to Lamb of God's early records

  • you're right. I remember a while ago hearing that.

  • um Chris Adler kicks ass, just cause he doesnt blast 24/7 hes a bad drummer? or because hes peddles arent flying 2000bpm ALL THE TIME. i think that makes him a better drummer, it takes more creativity to think a drum pattern then it does to just do what every other "Extreme Drummer" is doing, dont get me wrong, i LOVE Derek, hes an amazing drummer, and im not saying that one is better than the other, im just saying that everyone has their own style and you should respect whatever that may be.

  • Yeah, I don't know about Adler, but Derek Roddy also plays Jazz and some very funky stuff!

  • Record your own videos phaggot

  • he'sgrat in blast beats and this stuf but his music has no groove -_-

  • love to try that drum one day XD i also do blast need a cam to upload XD

  • i would kill to have drum lessons from this master!

  • I HATE POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • everyone's got speed

    Its about feel

  • I agree.

  • i also agree, that solo wouldnt even sound that good without the double bass pedal, it all about the groove!

    (Y)

  • Comment removed

  • Is he using triggers? because from 1:51 to 2:07 was too perfect at least the bass drum parts

  • triggers dont determine if the kicks are perfect or not, they are just another form of a microphone, they dont make your drums perfect, so yes hes playing them perfect

  • I enjoyed the little 'behold judas' bit that starts at like 2:52

  • i think i george kolias is better but thats just me derek roddys amazing

  • He may be a teeny weeny bit faster. but Derek is more versatile and technical not just speed. So I like Derek better

  • true i prefer kolias but thats just me they both are amazing anyone else notice how he sounds like red from pineapple express? derek roddy i mean

  • George is also very versatile and technical... George has played with Jazz ensembles and studied other forms of music for years, he just loves metal better.

  • omg. this guy is as fast as hell man.

  • Oh yeah, check my video out, no where near as good as this machine, but yeah. lol

  • Joey Jordison is fucking shit. Derek Roddy has been in many bands including Nile, Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, Council Of The Fallen, Today Is The Day, Traumedy, and Aurora Borealis.

He's the best versatile death metal drummer I've seen, he is a machine, and hes power, endurance, stamina and SPEED is fucking so much better than Joey Jordisuckson

  • joeys fuckin awesome but yeah good job man

  • i dont get it, hees sick, but is he just some random guy on youtube? or is he in a band?

  • Yeah, he has been in many bands. Look up the band Hate Eternal.

  • Not so much a fan of his music but he has done a lot for the death metal genre in terms of drumming. Any musician who is willing to pass on their skills is awesome imo.

  • this man is a machine O_O

  • Derek Roddys Drum Lessons & Solos Part 1: How to be discouraged and wanting to kill yourself because you suck.

  • hahahaha i just shit myself :D:D

    cant stop laughing

    great man !

  • which e drum is this

  • this shit was nice bout to watch it again

  • oooweee...im not worthy

  • Joey Jordison just got raped :)

  • i still like joey but derek seems like hes more a technical drummer then joey is, joey just seems a little faster then derek

  • Wrong. Listen to Hate Eternal - King of All Kings and "I, Monarch".

On the Album "I, Monarch" Derek plays @ 260bpm on the song "Behold Judas".

Name me a song where Joey plays even 220? Joey doesn't even do much blast beats at all.

Slipknot sucks. I liked them when I was about 13 but I've since grown up - hopefully all you little joey fans can do the same.

  • wow it seems like u still need some growing up 2 do

  • Let me guess...because I quoted tempos, you think I'm the type of person that only rates drummers by how fast they play?

Derek does anything Joey does and a lot more, plus back when he was playing for Hate Eternal he was doing it at some of the most extreme speeds (his extreme speed just being an added bonus on top of how technical the drumming was). I don't see Joey using 2 or 3 snares at a time with about 6 or 7 pedals to negotiate.

  • I've listened to Slipknot alot, and the most blast beating he does must be in the song Three Nil and that's not even much.

  • Slipknot typically seems to be around 180-200BPM and tends to be simplish beats with maybe some kinda tricky fills loosely based around the quads concept (4 16ths played right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot). Slow, pretty simple, boring....piss weak clean vocals, kids music.

  • Indeed, and Joey doesn't do all the drumming either. He has Shawn and Chris, the precusionists who does like, half of the work on almost every song.

  • Joey sucks balls. A good drummer is someone like Romain Goulon, Jordan Varella or Mauro Mercurio. (many more but you get the general idea)

  • ya dudes seriously...look up a joey jordanson drum solo.....its easy to see that it basicly is just really fast double bass (which is debatable... personally i think it sounds sloppy and disgusting)with a little bit of picalo snare drum rudiments and maybe a little bit of tom toms here and there. now, i am not saying he suks, but i absolutely HATE all of there fans who know NOTHING about drumming and say "OMG! HES THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD!"

  • word.

  • HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

  • I love how he doesn't wuss out with the finger "pull and grab" techique. All powerful wrist action. F'ing awesome. No point in playing fast if you can't play it strong. Derek kills.
