How many films were unnecessarily referenced in this? Just by viewing the trailer and scattered clips I noticed Spione; Metropolis, A Matter of Life or Death; Vampyr and so on. Just because you're relatively known as an actress and are granted access to clips from classic films shouldn't allow you to direct pictures. I found this incredibly irritating and wasteful, she should have made wrote a script and directed an actual film that tested visual elements but instead she took the easy way out.
I "get it" but I think Keaton squandered her chances to produce something the equivalent of Citizen Kane. I believe all directors who take their work seriously should aspire to produce the greatest film of all time (especially if it's their debut). The only thing I liked about the picture is it's complete anarchic expose of the farce that is religion. Outside of showing idiocy at it's roots I found it incredibly tedious and lacking any sort of ambition. I prefer Ken Russell's The Devils.
i think keaton is fascinated with people, whether they're completely sane or completely not. i also have a feeling she made the film she wanted to make regardless of what anyone else thought about her or this particular piece of art.
@Misterioso The Devils?... nowhere near as hilarious. Expecting every first film to match the tone of Kane is... funny. The film is comedic, just like Keaton. That's the part you dont seem to 'get.' The film clips mirror pop myth as subjectively wack as any individual opinings. The gamut of common depictions of Heaven in words and images spill out brilliantly to corner any thoughtful viewer into realizing how absurdly human all religiosity is, & in a way no one ever thought to do before.
Looks like a very interesting documentary. Or is it a film? Either way, I'm surprised it's been around since 1987 and I never heard of it until now. Thanks for the cool post.
