    It still doesn't solve the long term structural problems that have to be addressed before there can be long term job creation.

  • Because it's a wildlife preserve. Means nothing to Big Oil & their servants - the GOP. But the long term job creation for America will depend on amending trade agreements, education, and development of new manufacturing processes that can't be outsourced. Drilling in the wildlife preserve is not even a drop in the bucket, and a temporary one at that.

  • Oil exploration is capital intensive, but less labor intensive than most other manufacturing industries. Go research it if you don't believe me. I did just that a few months ago, but I'm not going to go back now & look it all up for you.

    Unless you have actually researched it yourself, don't just give your uninformed opinion.

    The manufacturing industry, and some parts of the service industries, have been gutted as a result of free trade agreements written by the corporations & "sold" to the Clinton & then the Obama administration. Obama, unlike the GOP, at least will put more money into getting more "green" jobs & into education, which translates into more jobs in future.

  • As for "cap & trade", that's a whole book of arguments & counter arguments. One thing it does make clear is that Obama was serious about doing something about global warming, another issue the GOP ignores.

  • 1) Offshore drilling is a state by state decision. 2) The GOP wanted to allow drilling in wildlife preserves, of course, because GOP always listens to the Big Oil corporations. It would only delay the process of running out of oil, it wouldn't prevent it.

    3) The GOP gutted funding for alternative energy research & subsidies for those manufacturing "green" technologies.

  • Actually, Obama got elected because the majority of Americans shared his vision of finally confronting issues that had been ignored by the previous admin., including: h.c. reform, less confrontational foreign policy, reducing Americas dependence on foreign oil, investment to grow the manufacturing sector by becoming a leader in "green" technologies, to name a few.

  • Republican Richard Nixon proposed a national h.c. plan in 1971. It was defeated by Democrats for their own political purposes. Now it's a Dem. admin. that's proposing h.c. reform & the Republicans that are trying to kill it for their own political purposes.

    America needs h.c. reform urgently. If we wait for the perfect bill, or wait for Republicans to solve the problems - it's a lost cause. This bill contains much needed reforms. It's not the end - it's a start.

  • There's that GOP lie "gov. run healthcare" again. The h.c. bills would end some insur. co. abuses, & have a panel to provide the research findings about what works & what doesn't. (Nothing would stop insur. co.s from offering additional coverage.) Private doctors & hospitals would still be private, private insurance co.s would still dominate the market, & the CBO est. is that only 3% of the pop. would be under the public option. Just how in hell is that "gov't run h.c."?

  • The price difference is that the people who can't afford and the companies that refuse to go along with this bill are the ones who pay the fines/tax to make this bill come in under 900 billion dollars. They counted on these people to meet this demand. I get my information from LISTENING to all of the idiots in congress and READING as much news, yes from fox news as well, from as many media outlets I can and from reading these bills.

  • Fines were never included in the "900 bilion $ (1 billion/yr) calculation. Also, small businesses are exempted from the mandatory requirements that apply to larger businesses, and the bill also includes premium subsidies for low income individuals.

  • If you read the senate bill there is a clause that says a health board will determine preventative care and cost care. That is RATIONING, Great Britain has the same board. The democrats have said that they knew premiums would go up across the board, Pelosi refused to answer questions about possible jail time for people who can't afford health insurance, The house bill will cost 1.05 trillion dollars, but the dems say it came in at under 900 billion dollars and will cover 96% of americans. cont.

  • The health board will insure that insurance plans cover preventative care procedures that are shown to be cost effective. That's a plus and to everyone's benefit. Of course the GOP twists that into something sinister, & of course some people like you swallow the GOP spin hook, line & sinker.

    As for premiums going up, of course they will go up. Without h.c. reform they will go up a lot more, because the h.c. reform bill includes cost saving measures like the focus on preventative care.

    I guess this bill is so great that they put in a stipulation that say's congress is 100% EXEMPT from using it. READ IT!

  • We are in such a financial mess due to the way our previous administrations delt with our money that the only way we are going to get out of this is to be taxed. Sorry but it has to come somewhere and I really doubt if Bush and his buddies are going to give it back. This bill will save overall money and provide a chance at healthcare for all. I can think of better things to gripe about how moneys being spent other than this reform.

We lived the high life and let past administrations do to us what our credit companies did to us.   • Here;s some bill sections the GOP won''t mention: Page 122. sect. 233(a) 3. responsibility for guidelines to make insurance plans more easily understood using standard plain language.Sect. 144, which creates an ombudsman to finally assist people who have been screwed by their insurance company.

    sect. 152, preventing unfair discrimination in providing health care coverage.sect. 153. whistle blower protection

    sect 162. Ending health insurance rescission abuse.

  • The list goes on. It provides coverage to another 36 million Americans, introduces real competition & breaks the private HC insurance monopoly, closes the doughnut hole for seniors and ensures insurance covers preventative care that reduces long term medical costs.

  • The bill also creates an insurance plan "exchange" that would a) give individuals & small businesses a mechanism to "pool" their purchasing power in order to reduce costs, and b) effectively allows cross-state competition in h.c. insurance.

  • That would be for companies with more than 50 employees, i.e. large companies. Also, that is $750 per person, the fine - not as small as what you make it sound like. Lastly you don't mention the bad PR such a company would incur from paying this fine.

  • I see a lot of comments that "just let insurance companies compete across state lines". What you will never hear from any GOP politician is that the h.c. reform bill essentially does allow cross-state competition via the "exchange" set up by the bill.

  • Private health care premiums continue to increase an average of $1500/yr. & will hit $30,000/yr within a decade.

    The fines you mention kinda pale in comparison.

    Besides, if you can afford h.c. insurance you should buy it, other wise you use the emergency ward at everyone else's expanse. The bill provides premium assistance for low income.

  • The "exchange" has governmnet ran plans. That's not an "exchange' as long as it's run by the government.

    The "exchange" is the different form of the public options. Not any and every provider are allowed to take part. Only providers such as AARP and those government subsidies providers.

The "cut's to medicare" are not cuts to services but anticipated savings from reducing waste & inefficiency, such as eliminating the taxpayer subsidies to insurance companies for providing the same services as medicare but with a 14% cost surcharge for insurance co. "subsidy". 3) the greatest danger to medicare services is the increasing h.c. costs if nothing is done to "bend the curve".
