@CrazyBejbi lol, i do not think New Scientist think we are stupid. If someting does not make sense, i advice that you listen to it or read it once more before commenting about it. There is always the risk of having miss-understood or miss-heard something.
@CrazyBejbi I don't know about the voice-over, but I do think you're kind of dumb. Power is a more accurate term than 'electricity'. P = UI, or power = voltage * current (which is expressed in Watts).
@ReasonSharp the driver's body sits in the large white section below the solar cells that houses the single rear wheel. The clearest side-on view seems to be at about 0:06
lol and if you gave it over to the gov. like some wants nothing new will ever get developed, they'd just drag out the same old technologies... Good job!
Nice design very slim and streamlined. Not sure how old the solar tech is in that car. I'm wondering if they had the latest and greatest efficiency for lowest weight ratio solar cells. If not fitting it with newer ones might increase its speed even greater.
@jeffsadowski Hiya, I just wanted to point out that I believe the factor that affect top speed is the power to drag ratio(type thing) rather than power to weight ratio, so you don't need necessarily lighter panels, just more space efficient ones. Basically I'm saying denser panels would be fine if they produced more power.
Weight is proportional wheel drag. wheel drag >> air resistant drag. Besides that the the only thing you could decrease surface area on would be the solar cells. By decreasing the solar cell size you decrease power thus your stuck in the same situation. True enough it is power per drag ratio.
These solar panels suck, Better more efficient solar cells that convert more of the light spectrum into electricity are in development. Why bother to build a car powered with primitive shit photovoltaic cells?
Well just imagine what power can be drawn from solar cells in 20 Years. Even thou this might not be a "Car" as wen know it - it still moves at 88 Km/h just because the sun shines. Would you rather walk 300 km through a heated dessert road or move for "free" at 88 km/t. If we the Humans had started to research this much more intensely just 30 years ago we would be much further in terms of fossil free transport by now. Any speed record made by a solar cell car is thumps up from me.
A very real danger with going so fast with these vehicles is the fact a wind gust can knock them over. These vehicles are so light, and have a such a large horizontal surface for the wind to get under, that this is becoming a problem...
Just look at what happened to one of the top favourites, the Belgian team, in the solar olympics last year...
@tman6810, No that´s no longer true. Bugatti as build a special sports version of the Veyron that has 1200 Horse Power and goes 30 Km-faster. Bugatti is again the fastest.

according to wikipedia, 88km/h was broken over ten years ago, and the record is somehwere over 100km/h.

@lygophile most solar races use solar and solar-charged-batteries combined. That must be the 100km/h you were thinking of.
