thats been dropped for the Chally 2. They were going to go smoothbore to save money but because smoothbore ammo is all 1 piece they had a trial and they could only store 6 rounds in the tank. Rifled ammo is in 3 parts and the turret is designed for it.
The money they would save bringing in a smoothbore gun would be beaten by a major redesign of the turret system so the CR2 will NOT be bringing in the L-55.
+ the Abrams should have the L-55 fitted as standard anyway. I believe there are figures floating around which suggest a decent performance increase over the L-44

Challenger is meant to survive against ATGM, don't get cocky.

The difference between the M1, Leopard 2 and Challenger 2 relating to accuracy and fire-power is so slight in comparison that it's actually insignificant......Weaknesses are obviously the M1's fuel consumption, Challenger 2's use of 3 piece ammunition (Stemming from Chieftain and Challenger 1 days) and Leopard's lack of combat experience in large Tank on Tank combat (Only weakness I could find) which the latter two both have proved their worth.

@locoawise Well obviously the Job of MBTs is to take out other tanks, but that's not all that they can do. An example of this would obviously be the M1A1 or M1A2 that was originally built to take on hordes of Russian MBTs as would do this it would fire the M829 APFSDS. But it can also engage infantry, structures, and even low flying aircraft with rounds such as the M1028 or M830A1. Also Tanks are use for breaking through enemy fortifications.

@locoawise MBTs well never be a decisive element in a war, yes they help alot but are useless if the can't perform in unison with the rest of an Army that includes Infantry, aircraft, and other vehicles. About Brazils military structure I know little to nothing about the country so i can't offer much in the way of an opinion, but i doubt that they need brand new current gen MBTs. And yes the more open an area the more effective your tank can be. But most engagements will be less than 3000m.
@locoawise The Leopard 1s have a huge flaw in their design where the sides and rear of the turret can be breached by .50 machine gun fire. This caused Canadian Forces in Afghanistan to rush field Leopard 2s until they can either fix the issue or replace the Leopards.
Though tanks do have a role in a country as large as Brazil, I think that their role will be limited to Assault Gun and Heavy weapons support . The key goal for Brazilian security should be mechanized infantry.

Iraqi's use cheap 40mm fragmation rockets, which are meant to go up against unarmored ground targets such as infantry not vehicles, Challenger was made to go up against most RPG's like most modern tanks, MILAN missiles are old, they were meant to be cheap, easy to produce, and destroy and disable light old Soviet tanks such as the T-54, T-64, and T-72 which armor is very weak. Challenger is meant to survive against ATGM, don't get cocky.

@DANIAC262 The british tank (Chally 2) uses a rifled barrel because it uses HESH rounds which are not fin stableised so they need to be for accuracy. thats why the british use rifled barrels. The APFSDS rounds from the other tanks use fins so they dont need to have a rifled barrel. Both produce similar effects and it is undisputed which is better.

The difference between the M1, Leopard 2 and Challenger 2 relating to accuracy and fire-power is so slight in comparison that it's actually insignificant......Weaknesses are obviously the M1's fuel consumption, Challenger 2's use of 3 piece ammunition (Stemming from Chieftain and Challenger 1 days) and Leopard's lack of combat experience in large Tank on Tank combat (Only weakness I could find) which the latter two both have proved their worth.
I'm just glad there on the same side.

Anyway Challenger is speed on rough terrain, defence and accuracy if anything, its about getting there and lasting long enough to kill the guy with as little shots as possible.
Abrams is all range and therefore firepower, but whats that worth if you miss? Very fast on roads.
Don't know much about the Leopard except that it looks funky.
Its not a matter of balancing it out like top trumps cards, its how you use them.

The main use of the modern MBTs ammunition and consequetly the tank itself is to destroy other MBT with tough armor.So one question just occured me, What if a country dont have a significative number of MBTs, whats the use of having them in a battle right? And your vid was quite interesting, but there was more than just the three MBT of the title, I think.

@locoawise Well obviously the Job of MBTs is to take out other tanks, but that's not all that they can do. An example of this would obviously be the M1A1 or M1A2 that was originally built to take on hordes of Russian MBTs as would do this it would fire the M829 APFSDS. But it can also engage infantry, structures, and even low flying aircraft with rounds such as the M1028 or M830A1. Also Tanks are use for breaking through enemy fortifications.

@locoawise MBTs well never be a decisive element in a war, yes they help alot but are useless if the can't perform in unison with the rest of an Army that includes Infantry, aircraft, and other vehicles. About Brazils military structure I know little to nothing about the country so i can't offer much in the way of an opinion, but i doubt that they need brand new current gen MBTs. And yes the more open an area the more effective your tank can be. But most engagements will be less than 3000m.

@locoawise The Leopard 1s have a huge flaw in their design where the sides and rear of the turret can be breached by .50 machine gun fire. This caused Canadian Forces in Afghanistan to rush field Leopard 2s until they can either fix the issue or replace the Leopards.
Though tanks do have a role in a country as large as Brazil, I think that their role will be limited to Assault Gun and Heavy weapons support . The key goal for Brazilian security should be mechanized infantry.

beyond that there are blue tracker systems, thermal & electronics that could be used to locate hidden enemy & any devices they may have.
but as yet the many commanders & decision makers are too old and derp'y to view tanks in that way so such systems afaik aren't widely deployed.

@keirfree You're a moron buddy. The F22 is a completely American contruct, it's not even available for export. Lockheed-Martin, an American company builds every system except the engines which are Pratt and Whitney I believe. The only part of the F-35 not built by the US is the lift fan for the Royal Navy/USMC version and the alternate engine by RR (which is pointless).

@monimstarfox actually a few years ago 2 american stealth boats were watched on radar approching british waters without permission, and radar told the brits how many boats, which country made them, then the computer accessed a database automaticaly telling them every detail about the 2 ships, they were warned that they were approaching british waters, and told to leave, at which the yanks replied 'sorry sir but our tracking systems is informing us that we are still 850 miles away from brit water
