I was completely floored at the first note! I was not expecting that big of a sound from the looks of you! I studied opera at IU (Indiana University, Bloomington) and this song was part of my repertoire Don't let these critics get to you. All I hear is blah, blah, im not as good as.you, blah. Very nice performance! Now I need to see if you have any other gems posted here. Thomas O'Rourke
@tjor2 , you are probably not enough informed! this man is ruining music! because some people like you encourage him to go on! instead of lying let's be honest, he has a voice but he should first LEARN from GOOD teachers THEN come and post such videos!
You have a nice quality to your voice.. it sounds like you just learned how to connect your voice.. you could free up the rest of that instrument (neck up) try breaking a song down, singing lines over and over, record and play back to yourself until the pitches and notes are perfect.. This is one of the toughest songs in the world to do justice to.. volume is not a character, not a dynamic. Its tough to get enough takes in a studio to get perfect. Oh yeah and listen to everyone recording!!
Instead of sending snippy and very nasty messages about this young mans voice why not send encouragement and solutions that you think would help him. It sounds to me that there are a lot of sour grapes in this bunch of so-called performers and listeners.
Instead of sending snippy and very nasty messages about this young mans voice why not send encouragement and solutions that you think would help him. It sounds to me that there are a lot of sour grapes in this bunch of so-called performers and listeners.
@khykhy , because he has not the minimum amount of knowledge about what he is doing. He sings in the throat in a bad way, pronounces German words as an Englishman who can not understand German but reads from the paper in front!!!, and he is showing off! a video in a studio! with mic! that place is for professionals not beginners! he might have talent but pride kills talent! some people should tell him the truth rather lying like you!
@PooyaRadbon Please get your facts straight before assuming things. I did not lie to this young man buy giving him any unwarranted critique. I simple suggested that rather than bashing him and hurling insults perhaps it would be just kind and human decency to offer a fair critique about his voice placement, his language his everything. YOUR critique was fine and polite with what seems to have the knowledge behind a statement. OTHERS were just being rude and nasty. Human decency is a lost art.
@khykhy , polite or not polite this is the question!!! : shall we stop criticizing and rather encouraging these people or not?
By no means encouraging! it is not human! you should encourage some one who has talents! he is not talented! unfortunately! rather fraud! the pianist looks like my old teachers...both do not seem like fraud people but those who have encouraged them has done a false thing!
It is not about my taste or your taste! this man has not the basis and sings Der Zwerg!! and even Erlkönig!
He pronounces for instance Bergen BERGIN! or wagen WAGIN!! and no consonanten are recognizable!
The pianist plays the Beethoven 5th symphony motif which repeats in the piece too often by Schubert like she is playing a Haydn early Divertimento for Fortepiano!! these are not very small faults but these show the lack of basis! the piano part should be so strong to paint the words of the poem
@PooyaRadbon You are missing the entire point so I will no longer engage in speaking about it. However I would love to see a video of you performing the piece. Maybe you can show everyone how it is done since you seem to be such an expert on the subject.
And if I stay here and write you what I hear it takes at least two hours to criticize him! he even has not ONE nice thing in his singing! he considers this great music too much on surface! that is his biggest fault. I tell him here again, just sit down and learn your place and do not make the musicians' society more crowded!
Being a student is very difficult. Those who insult you are not damn people! they have right. And those who say ''wonderful'' are not informed about music and singing.
@MisterPapageno , now this is a good comment. So it is better to delete all these stupid videos and go to a good teacher and THEN do it all from the beginning! every body is not stupid to say you are doing wonderful! it is so sad to see some tasteless and uninformed people encouraged most uninformed beginners like you!
@MisterPapageno , how bad that you don't understand. At least you understand this ''stop singing and go to work somewhere else otherwise you ruin music and sound, OR at least go to an honest teacher, don't fool around yourself and others by these videos!
@MisterPapageno , you are not, ok! what is the problem? what I said was to him, I hope he reads and calms down his awful self confidence!
What is going on in America?! this is the 5th musical catastrophe I have faced since last month!!! there are some good musicians there! why dont these people go to them! they are afraid of learning!
@MisterPapageno I totally agree with the inglota comment. It's consistently flat. If this was done in 2009, there is still time. Thank god male voices don't begin to mature until their 30's.
One tip or advice, as you like, when you plan to sing more german songs, make some basics in german accentuation/intonation and it would sound magnificent!
la voz está muy engolada, a veces el cantante se descuadra del ritmo... tiene buena voz pero tiene que trabajar técnica de la voz, definitivamente esta canción no está a su nivel
Keep workin' man, but you're not ready for this stuff. You've got great potential, but worry about developing your talents, not making videos and recordings in studios. Time in the practice room and a quality teacher are your two best friends right now. Clearing up issues with your tongue, placement, and breathe connection will clear up a lot of the intonation issues and take you a long way. Best to ya.
The pianist doesnt master the tempo. And, you need to really watch your intonation. It is constantly a bit below in pitch. Also, your sound is a bit "old" for a twenty something guy... But keep it up... :)
I was one of the first to comment one of your first songs. (under a diffrent name). You had very good material in your voice, but you had long ways to go if you actually wanted to be a singer. I was quite blunt in my words back then, and let me be just as blunt now. This is.. GOOD. You truley impress with your progress. There is still more training but, so it is for all singers. I love the intensity. I'll leave it at that. I study at an Academy of Opera in Sweden, and hope to hear more from you.
I seem to have read from your profile page that you are only twenty years old. I am concerned that your sound is a bit "overmature" for your age, even with a lower-voiced male. Main culprit: from watching your other videos, you can see a definite scoop in the middle and back of the tongue. This is indicative of basal root tongue tension. If this is the case (which I think it is), please address this rapidly for this can decay the voice with most alacrity.
I don't think anyone doubts your technical ability and the superb quality of your voice - but Ian Bostridge's rendition is so very much more evocative (an aesthetic observation)
Wow, so much improvement... bumped into your earlier vids first and latest last. My mouth pretty much dropped open with this one. I'm a muso, but not as much in voice as instrumental - so no criticism from me as I am not qualified! Instead, simply... well done!!
You have become so much better, and your German has increased incredibly. There are a few minor thingies, though, as the letter "s" is pronounced like "sh" when it stands before a "t" or a "p" - so you should say something like "shtrife" in the word "Nebelstreif". And your "ö"s still need some polishing, too.
The line "und wiegen und tanzen und singen dich ein", however, is performed flawlessly. Wonderful.
Honestly this songs needs both a great singer but piano player. If they cannot play the triplets in octaves then it shouldn't be played. It gives it a different character... it isn't as much of a galloping sound.
all is amateur ...horrible...!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a french teacher of musicology... Erlkonig is my favourite song..
It's a really hard song to sing... Congratulation !!
But, one or two things: be careful, you have to respect the sheet !!!
And you have to change the pianist if you want sing that...
Listen Thomas Quastoff or Fiescher Dieskau !!

The initial drama is working really nice! You have a deep and well sounding voice.
Relax the lower jaw and open up for the sound.

you pronounce the word: "düster" not with an "u", but with a "ü", it sounds like the english vocal letter: "u".
take care with the "sh". do not speak "st", it sounds like the dialect of Hamburg^^
