Born in 1960 - Hard to explain to people the impact David Gates & Bread (and similar bands) had in the 70s on FM radio farmats - This format has mostly vanished now - Its hard for the younger generation to find it except via YouTube & similar sites - Thanx for posting!
@spectres0024 Born in 59 and even though I complain about getting older and wanting to be in my 20's again, I would've missed out on the 60's music. So I guess I'll just roll with the punches. And thanks to my two older brothers who would play David Gates on the phonograph.
Beautiful song, I was lucky to be born in 52, I had the 60's & 70's & all of that great music. Bread could rock out nicely too. Check out their song "Truckin". (It has nothing to do with the Grateful Deads' song)
I started dating my boyfriend in 1979, this was our "song". We danced to it at our wedding, and every once in a while it will play on the radio. That was 33 years ago; 2 kids, and 3 grandchildren later... still love that song, and still love him.
@clareghee you know what... kind like remind me my own story, I was totally in love with my wife back then and still do , now we are working out our retirement buy our kids and grandkids love to see my wife and I dancing to this kind a music, God bless you and your family, and please never let this memories die, pass then to your new generation.......pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase........................
@dsagas1282 Thank you for your lovely words. At every wedding I have ever been to, my husband sneaks off to requests this song, all I have to hear is those first few chords and my eyes still water up. It sounds that by your example, your grandchildren already see what real love looks like.
Hey not to be mean it's a great song and the real person who wrote the song sold it to then for 1,000 dollars and that was my dad and when my dad wrote it he was in 9th grade. So plz don't be mad i just wanted to say that.
This song has gotten more responses than any I've seen on u-tube. Yes, this song is very special and moving. I thank SomieReturns for sharing this with us. You have a great heart and are one excellent judge of fine music. I do miss this music but thanks to our wonderful technology and this information network we are able to relive wonderful moments. Dear SommieReturns, I love this song, and you did a fine job on the video, and it makes me happy to see so many positive responses about it, especially from the folks who wern't even born yet! Maybe there is hope for the world after all. LOL!
Sorry I didn't reply to hundreds of comments here. Just wanted to thanks a bunch to everyone for leaving comments to this incredibly beautiful song. It never gets old to me. I don't know whether I should feel sad I was born in 1985 so I missed the best era for music ever, or I should just be thankful for the wonders of technology so that I can discover all the blast from the past. This song touches my heart every time I hear it... Makes me wonder how anyone could live without music....? ♥ ♥ ♥
@SommieReturns I have not been on my channel lately so I apologize that I can't reply to everyone individually. Just really happy that there are those youngsters who appreciate real music like me. And those who always have and always will love it. May great music lives forever!
@SommieReturns I hear YOU...I LOVE MUSIC...I know people who drive in their cars and dont even listen to the RADIO...SMH....I LOVE IT...If this world EVER ENDED,Just put me on an ISLAND with Food,Beer, and a RADIO and i would be happy...lol
@SommieReturns I'm Mexican and I'm pianist. Is one of the most beautiful, wonderful and lovely songs that I ever heard in my life. I'm 57 y.o. and every time I listen this song, I "fly" through the time and takes me to heaven. There was a radio program in Mexico in 1971, named "La hora romantica" (the romantic hour) and since then I love "If". (and I also play and sing it) Thanx for uploading it.
@ludwigking I am sorry to hear you've lost your girlfriend. It's such a beautiful song. And if it was her favorite, she must have been a beautiful, gentle soul.
@ludwigking So sorry about your girlfriend, this song certainly is a beautiful song and it is no wonder she loved it and was played at her memorial service...my condolences.
@SommieReturns It is my era and I cried. I always loved it. and now my time is almost over. made me so weepy, but happy too. I love my husband so much and hope I can fight this thing and stay with him a little longer. How I wish we had met way earlier. but ya can't ever turn the clock back. I feel very blessed to even have had time with him for a short 11-? years. way too fast it flew by! All lovers should relate to this song. I agree:"Makes me wonder how anyone could live without music....?"
you are a brave person.Like Dan our time is our time. This will be for me too and everyone. I have envy or maybe respect for your brevity. I admire your courage life is what we make of it. you have done well I hope I have that courage at that time
@SommieReturns I am grateful that you uploaded this beautiful song! I was lucky enough to live through the 70's and 80's and experience the great music when it was new. I am thankful for the interest that younger generations like you have in this great period of music as well! Take care.
You didn't have to be born at that time to enjoy the music. I am 54 and was in HS during this time. Just sit back and enjoy. I am enjoying rediscovering this again, it brings back good memories.
@SommieReturns Every time I hear this tune it reminds me of of one night in the early 1980's, in Washington State. I was listening to an early, EARLY morning AM station being transmitted from California, and this young woman, very distraught and crying, called in a request for this song to the DJ. Her boyfriend had just died, and this was their song. It affected a lot of young lovers back in the day. Thanks for sharing it.
@SommieReturns well thanks for posting! this is my first listen, omg how i love Bread and the whole genre. john denver, the carpenters, gordon lightfoot... i love good ole rock and roll, but this music just makes me stop and go... ahhhhhhh!!!
@SommieReturns Hi there! you did an exelent job, thanx for posting this video, this son is one of the most beautiful songs to me, the music and the lyrics touches people hearts, well, just like all the old songs.
This song softly tells of how gentle and fragile love is. How much of a wish it can be, and how much it swells us with purpose, even through pain of things that may never be. Love is worth dreaming of.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
This is such a pretty song and it reminds me of those who I love that I lost and that I found. It reminds me of the simplistic things in life can be ever so complicated and that true, meaningful things are what we live by. <3
My sister lost he lover in early 70's after he visited another girl and died in a car accident. She still holds the regret and pain. They loved Bread and so do I. I was a hurt young boy of 12 or so and the words mean so much. God Bless Dean and I hope Lynn will forgive herself and him for being human. I do!
So many songs, so many good thoughts!!!! Electric light orchestra, Bee Gee's, Carpenters, Yes, Dean martin, all those good hits are nice to here every once in a while! :-)
This song took me back to days of wine and doses....I wish I could remember all the good music I heard and played aback then....I'm 62 now, retired, and still find the time to play along when I hear something like this...Thanks, that was fun...
A beautiful, timeless song. It's very difficult for me to listen to this as it was my first wife's and my song. I used to sing it to her and I always thought of her whenever I heard it. Sadly, She passed away this July, 2011. She was 52 and left me our beautiful daughter. I've been blessed with my current wife, as my first divorced me in 1992. We had 13 years together, some great and some not so great, but that's life. I hear this and my heart aches and I can't stop the tears. Thanks for posting
I will sing this song on my brothers wedding this spring. The song means soo much to me... And I hope my brother and his lovely fiancee will love it as much as I.
Bread was the ones with the love songs that reminded us all of what love really meant and that your heart would always lead you the right way.....that's what it's
i love this song. the background music is good and the melody is also pleasant. the voice of the singer just suits the song perfectly. 'then one by one, the stars would go out then you and i would simply fly away!' very touching. but i just don;t quite understand the lyrics of the beginning: 'if a picture paints a thousand words then why can't i paint you?' what is the meaning of these? does that mean: i would like to do a painting of you?
i love this song. the background music is good and the melody is also pleasant. the voice of the singer just suits the song perfectly. 'then one by one, the stars would go out then you and i would simply fly away!' very touching. but i just don;t quite understand the lyrics of the beginning: 'if a picture paints a thousand ships then why can't i paint you?' what is the meaning of these? does that mean: i would like to do a painting of you?
@chloelovescats1 "If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can't I paint you? The words will never show, the you I've come to know."
I think it means that he can't describe the one he loves with words... Not even with a thousand. Words isn't enough telling her how much he loves her. If he, for example would do a painting of her, it would be impossible to put her on the canvas, because it still wouldn't show the person he have come to know... Hope you understood what I tried to say. :)
Sylvia Barreto and I danced to this song about 20 times during a party at the girl's department building at St Bridget's College in Batangas in 1971. Afterwards I couldn't sleep for days thinking about her.
@Elixr9 you're right...this one is some memories to me as a kid who listened radio in those days...at least we got choice to the music we loved and still love ...! Bye !
I saw David Gates in 1977 with a girl i loved so much. We didn't stay together, she married someone else and I never got over her. I could never find someone with her heart. I will never give up trying to be with her again someday. Till my dying breath I will keep on trying.
@zorgen123 I understand...I'm in love with a woman who has some serious grudges against men. I know it's futile but I will not give up...it's been a long time since I've felt this way. And, no, she's not gay. She's been seriously mistreated and I do understand how she can feel. Keep up the good fight as I will.
I did the same thing. Get over it. It ain't worth it. When I think of her, I just change my mind immediately. Finally after 30 years it is ok. I got someone else that is so much better. If they don't love you, you are loving your own imagination. Never look back. I got a new philosophy because of her. When she looks over her shoulder to see where I am, I am twice as far as she thinks because I am turning my back too. Enjoy life!
@zorgen123 Sorry my friend but she thinks of you about the same as you dismissing some of your ex's. That's hard to take but, if the feeling were mutual, it would've happened already. Don't waste your life away, it's time to move on. Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien
Pictures are Memories.... But until you know when you're Loved, after 43 years... The "Truest Happinesses" Will be Fulfilled!!

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Have u lied? Have u stolen? Jesus said if you look at a woman with lust you have committed adultery with here in your heart. have u done that?
If God judge’s u by the Ten Commandments will u be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? Does this concern you?
Do u need a Savior from your sins?
Jesus (The Son of God)came, lived a sinless life, died on the cross (for our sins) and rose again on the third day.needgod.com

Sylvia Barreto and I danced to this song about 20 times during a party at the girl's department building at St Bridget's College in Batangas in 1971. Afterwards I couldn't sleep for days thinking about her.

Enjoy life!

@zorgen123 I was so very confused because I read that as "You saw David Gates with a girl" as "David Gates was on a date with said girl"

@zorgen123 Lost my truest love in much the same way...1972, the Carpenters but with the same ending.
She is never far from me in my memories. Sunny, whever you are....I'll always love you

@zorgen123 Sorry my friend but she thinks of you about the same as you dismissing some of your ex's. That's hard to take but, if the feeling were mutual, it would've happened already. Don't waste your life away, it's time to move on. Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien
