  • Hi dingo...yes i think that cedar is a pretty OK choice if you can't obtain Paulowina. just watch that it doesn't split up the grain and if it this does then just recess a narrow strip across the grain...Have fun !!

  • Dear Chris, I was thinking about making one of these boards, and I just wanted to make sure about the wood. I saw in one of your comments you said cedar would work is that a good choice of wood, because I can't find the other wood where I live. Thanks!

  • me and my dad might build one hell yea

  • hi there...all you need is Paulowina timber, PU glue and some basic woodworking tools and off you go!. you can use any lightweight timber really ...cedar for example would be a good choice. good luck and have fun. chris

  • Would you tell me all the materials needed to build one of these fine boards? I would really appreciate it.

  • That recycled pallet twinnie is unreal! how would i make one of them? How would you shape the rocker? is it super heavy? I have got to make one!!

  • is it possible to tell me wat kind of wood did he use to shape tat board ?

    tanx

  • @tiklit31 paulonia seems to be the most talked about wood - i'm not sure whats Chris makes his with.

  • Hi Chris,

In the middle of shaping my first alaia. I've decided to put a fairly deep concave through the last 15 inches or so - Hope it works ok. Have you found a particular bottom contour that seems to work well. It's great that these boards can be constantly refined. Great Vid by the way - gave me the inspiration to give it a go.

  • The background music was on my ipod at the time seemed to fit OK, it is a band from South Aust called The Beachnicks....pretty fun album if you like that sort of thing. sorry if it seemed a little cheesy...it was! but this is the first time I've ever used a video camera and done a video...so I was pretty happy!. thank s again for watching and I hope you all get plenty of fun waves to surf ...cheers , Chris

  • HI there ...thanks for all your comments, they been very encouraging ok , to answer a few questions, these ones are made from aussie grown paulowina , the red stringers are aussie cedar. the first few that I did had rolly bottoms and were bloody hard to ride. this on featured has the roll/ hull nose that runs to a triple concave setup in the tail. the blank has a small amount of rocker in it to assist it in turning, this design goes pretty good, The timber was laminated together using PU glue.

  • great boards looks good stoked!!!

  • what sort of wood do you use?

  • love the endless summer tunes in the background!

  • Right on Chris,

I like your boards, nice vid, keep em comming. I build hollow wood boards, and I will be shaping a redwood alaia for myself to play on. Do you like the concave in the bottom, or flat, sure you have tried both, I have not ridden one yet.

  • Still surfing a chris garrett board I got 5 years ago, the guy is an artist and a craftsman. Chris, came to visit you from Guernsey with my red 6 4 rocket fish. How is the flex tail project going?

  • Great guy as well. Nice work Chrisso.

  • Wouldn`t mind seeing some more examples of the timber boards you`re doing or have done? cheers

  • It's the combination of the ideas of many that push design boundaries forward, away from the petty single minded prejudices of the uninformed.

  • i`m afraid you have no idea what you`re talking about sadtree. This guy is a craftsman of the highest order, along with Wegener. I don`t know why you wanna pick favorites. Should we all be riding the same shit?? Open your eyes my friend.

  • I like how this guys a shaper and gives the credit for the board hes riding to a friend. Swallow tail alaia is interesting.

  • These boards look awesome and connect back to the roots of surfing, a beautiful modern interpretation of an ancient design, I want one. McTavish is right you are one of, if not the, most creative, contemporary surfboard maker on the planet.

Your boards not only look great, they surf great as well

    Mad surf scientists rule.
