Also after the shooting, the NRA cancelled every event out of sympathy exept for one meeting which was required by law. Tony Martin's plight has happened in the US, in Massachusetts. A man broke into a house, and was sexually assaulting the daughter of the house. The father came in and shot the assailant, only wounding him (out of mercy). The assailant sued the father for inflicting serious injury. Injuries sustained while commiting a crime are separate from the crime, in Massachusetts. Police there will tell you to shoot to kill, so you're the only witness,... because they know the law's bunk.

Also after the shooting, the NRA cancelled every event out of sympathy exept for one meeting which was required by law. the UK have reasonable force laws,Mr martin was jailed for shooting an "unarmed" kid in the back while the kid was retreating away from the farmhouse & he killed him ,it was an unnecessary use of force..that is why he was prosecuted it was not for protecting himself ,He was no longer in danger or fighting for his life ,He was told that he should have called Police for help as in a "phone call" after they had left ,But he decided to shoot to kill instead as they were leaving.

@paulspydar Pretty much. The handgun ban was 1997 after Dunblane. From 1997 to 2004-2006, gun crime (not including air guns) rose 110%. Source: Home Office's own statistics. It dropped a bit toward 2007, though was still double what it was at the ban. Daily Mirror has a piece about last year being the worst year yet, and quotes gun crime up 600% since 1978, but it's a newspaper, so don't take the last bits as gospel.

We can't stop illegal 'people' entering, let alone something as small as a handgun or sawn-off. Banning guns is easy and sends a proactive message to voters. Practically, it doesn't do much at all I'm afraid. Unless you can wave a wand and make all guns disappear, you just disarm the wrong people.

@paulspydar To reiterate what I said before, if it's a paper, I wouldn't take it as gospel. The home office figures are probably the best to go by. Any drop in gun crime in the late 00's, real or otherwise is certainly nothing to do with a gun ban in the 90's. I'm not pinning the rise in gun crime in the 90's on the ban either. I doubt it had an effect either way tbh. Criminals kept using guns, legal or otherwise regardless of the law.

i dont think they need to ban the guns, i think they need to change their government. first of all the officer asked to sencored for speaking out to the public so he wouldnt get fired? do they have freedome of speech? and then a guy was sent to life in prison because he was defending himself in his own home? This is all completely true. The gun laws in the United Kingdom have done nothing but deprive legitimate, innocent and legal citizens of not only their hobbies and interests, but of also one of their basic human rights - self defense. Something MUST be done in our country. Those who oppose the gun laws are often brainwashed by society's constant teaching of 'firearms being bad'. They are so mislead, we in Britain are NOT safe. Gun crime has increased since the ban, is that not proof enough?

Would they rather have a country full of immigrants? The immigrants probably won't honor the Queen much. Maybe she should leave the country, and turn the palace into a school for muslim children. Lose your right to have a gun and you submit yourself to the perils of your government. This is why liberals want guns banned, then they can do whatever they want to the people without having to worry about an uprising to oppose them.
The First Amendment gives you the right to petition and lobby your government, the Second Amendment guarantees it. Lose your guns and you lose your last line of defense to protect freedom and liberty from government infringement.

I can not believe how ridiculous this issue has become in the UK. This is so obviously simple. GUN BANS DO NOT REDUCE CRIME! People need to be able to protect themselves from other people who act in a less then civilized manner. I hope this does not happen in the US and I wish the best for the UK.

i erd that gun crime is not as bad as knife crime because with a gun u can get shot n are quite lightly 2 survive (unless its in the head) but when sum1s in ur face with a knife ther most lighly 2 keep stabin u n finish the job and a knife wound is more seriouse than a bullet wound

If someone wants to commit a crime with a gun, how will a gun ban protect you? Banning guns is the first step in losing more freedoms.

Tony Martin's plight has happened in the US, in Massachusetts. A man broke into a house, and was sexually assaulting the daughter of the house. The father came in and shot the assailant, only wounding him (out of mercy). The assailant sued the father for inflicting serious injury. Injuries sustained while commiting a crime are separate from the crime, in Massachusetts. Police there will tell you to shoot to kill, so you're the only witness,... because they know the law's bunk.
