@HadBrunt99 Actually with the advent of the media, the world of music has separated further into those who listen to whatever, and those who love music and invest time and money. If you are one of those, it's easier to find good bands without taking risks and as such indie labels have actually done a lot better than majors having gained more from increased knowledge than they lost from piracy. Increased knowledge actually costs majors some money though. Just keep buying good music.

I just don't believe diving into it without an intelligent approach is the right way. Sure, they should put forth some effort. That doesn't mean they should jump right into translating some music. They have to recognize some notes and chords without the music first so they can distinguish this from that.

Hell, tabs are great for ear training too for beginners. Learn the first few notes from tabs and try to figure out the rest for yourself. How do you know these people are doing that when they ask for tabs? I did that way back when I first started playing. But, whatever I guess.

Mastodon mix almost countless influences, these guys clearly share more than a few but they seem to have some of their own too.
