@MrSybertech Derek got the Golden Wrench because the drops were based on time. The drop times were leaked, and Drunken F00l got ahold of them. He counted down the drop time and a whole bunch of people crafted. Derek just happened to be the lucky guy, until Valve banned his account.
I felt heartbroken every time I heard it whilst I craft away everything. But I'm glad I don't need to be VAC banned or earning rage from other players.

did you use the crafting script to instacraft more than one item or just clicked fast? if it was fast, Valve was not right to ban you. If you used a script, well I still don't think Valve did right but it was more on the middle line.

You guys realise this is fake right? If any of you actually looked at the TF2 blog/PC Gamer (which is linked on Steam) you'd see that not only would text appear indicating that:
1) It would read "X has found Golden Wrench no.Y!" Instead of "X has found: Golden Wrench (or Z item), and it's possible to fake the latter using server plugins.
2) It would also indicate by pop-up UI window above the control point indicators in a round-edge rectangle, as shown in the PCGamer screenshots.
This has been around for AGES, long since the first random item drops started. Since then there's also been temporary hat and gold wrench plugins that let players play with ALL items for the time they're on that server (and only that server, as it doesn't stay in your backpack on leaving). May as well VAC ban servers, let alone people.
@MikeyTWolf Oh, and on top of that, limted edition drops/unlocks are BS. This is an FPS, not an MMO. You can't customise ANYTHING bar what you're holding, and that's just making a choice, not customisation e.g. rambo engy or defensive engy? instead of +Attack, + Speed + Crit from crafting components into weapons, armour etc.
@MikeyTWolf It's not fake and both of your points refer to the same thing. The pop-up UI window does not display during demo playback since it's a game coordinator message from Steam and thus not written to the demo file. You could also confirm it's not fake by looking at the time displayed in chat before the wrench was found and then looking at the time the wrench was actually found (except the wrench was deleted so I don't know if you'll be able to find that information somewhere).

It was the fault of their system that allowed the leak in the first place, should have just made a random generator that not even the employees knew. Btw, did they really remove the option to add headgear using a server plugin that was used to thank donators? If so, the micro transaction support rumor for steam makes a lot of greedy sense.

@fashnek Umm, either you are really bad with analogies or you have no concept of the law. If 20 guys get together, they are all accesories in the crime and YES they all do get punished. But this wasn't a planned event to "steal" a wrench nor are you able to compare real life consequences to a video game world punishment.

Anyway, my point concerned the idea that one person is supposedly not responsible unless he is the sole person trying to do it. So I'll write my own analogy: (one person trying to steal a car) is to (one person trying to use leaked information to gain an advantage) as (ten people trying to steal a car) is to (ten people trying to use leaked information). The number of people with you is irrelevant.

Assuming for a moment that there's nothing wrong with this, smart is keeping quiet, covering your tracks, or just plain not advertising it like this. Smart is getting away with it.

You guys realise this is fake right? If any of you actually looked at the TF2 blog/PC Gamer (which is linked on Steam) you'd see that not only would text appear indicating that:
1) It would read "X has found Golden Wrench no.Y!" Instead of "X has found: Golden Wrench (or Z item), and it's possible to fake the latter using server plugins.
2) It would also indicate by pop-up UI window above the control point indicators in a round-edge rectangle, as shown in the PCGamer screenshots.

This has been around for AGES, long since the first random item drops started. Since then there's also been temporary hat and gold wrench plugins that let players play with ALL items for the time they're on that server (and only that server, as it doesn't stay in your backpack on leaving). May as well VAC ban servers, let alone people.

@MikeyTWolf Oh, and on top of that, limted edition drops/unlocks are BS. This is an FPS, not an MMO. You can't customise ANYTHING bar what you're holding, and that's just making a choice, not customisation e.g. rambo engy or defensive engy? instead of +Attack, + Speed + Crit from crafting components into weapons, armour etc.

@MikeyTWolf It's not fake and both of your points refer to the same thing. The pop-up UI window does not display during demo playback since it's a game coordinator message from Steam and thus not written to the demo file. You could also confirm it's not fake by looking at the time displayed in chat before the wrench was found and then looking at the time the wrench was actually found (except the wrench was deleted so I don't know if you'll be able to find that information somewhere).
