Thanks for posting this video but as a relative newcomer to electrics you are far too assumptive. Opening statement 'we are going to do an Isolation test.....but you don't explain why we do it or what we are looking for! eg damaged cable sheath. You then tell us that 'we have to be a little bit cautious sometimes for sensitive equipment...should we unplug them? When you join the croc clips you tell us it's a 'dead short'...what's a dead short? No warning about touching croc clips....500V!!!
@splitneyboria, You are checking the insulation resistance. The insulation (The PVC bit) is the non-conductive material surrounding the conductor (the metal bit). If the insulation on the cable is damaged and near another conductor you can get short faults and potentially discharge which can degrade the insulation further. Unplug sensitive equipment. A dead short is a short circuit. Clip the crocodile clips on your hand and test the insulation resistance of yourself. at 500V You'll get a tingle.
Thanks dude got this metre last year spent 3 months asking guys how to use it and nothing but empty promises, boss just makes up the values! So thanks
@county582 Your boss needs to be locked up! Electricity kills, enough said! Have you tried enroling on a course, there are lots of companies around that will gladly take your money! I am just finishing an electrician's course with a company called OLCI Ltd, as far as selling is concerned they are very well organised but I think some of their trainers could do with some retraining! Good luck mate.
Hi, I've just started Studying Electrical Engineering, and I can't really do any practical Until I pass the Theory Bit for the following test: 1. Continuity of protective conductors 2. Continuity of ring final circuit conductors 3. Insulation Resistance 4. Polarity 5. Earth Electrode Resistance 6. RCDs 7. Earth Fault Loop Impedance and so, this Vid actually help me a lot to understand what I'm actually writing about. Keep doing this sort of Videos ;)

Is it not recommended that new installations should have an insulation resistance of 2M Ohms?

@DrClarkee123 Thanks a million! Not sure I want to connect myself up to 500v though! :-)

You require a reading of over 1mega ohmn not 500!

@14rnr Iv just started this course at collage (level 2) but just having trouble with the testing :)

@14rnr
I'm doing that in the spring/summer .. was the exam hard? and did you only have to make a 90 degree bend with conduit? or any bubble sets?
Ryan199403 1 month ago
@Ryan199403
Yes you will need to make a 90 degree bend, the exam isn't too bad if you've had a good lecturer who has made the effort to teach you well.
Time will be youe enemy if like me you're not working as a spark and take longer to construct your work.
