@Angk0rwat then i guess ill change my name to twit, because ill never be ok with a shitty rolling stones song being turned into white jazz with a bunch of noodling solos. no thanks.
youre so clever! god forbid someone be critical of such a genuis, right, angkorwat???? everyone should just blindly go along with anything someone does because their previous accomplishments have given them enough merit that it doesnt matter if what theyre doing offends your sensibilities or maybe even their own. good call.
i agree. and it sounds corny as fuck because of that. and i think ben monder is a brilliant, innovative, immensely talented guy, but hes totally out of his element with this dreadful song; his solo is straight masturbation.
Ben Monder is the best guitarist ever! Denjz, get your head out of your ass. You clearly miss the point of music. I would be honored if Ben Monder, or anyone else for that matter, covered my music. Check out his book with his transcriptions that he put together. His playing goes beyond anyone as far as I'm concerned. You will attempt chords you never thought humanly possible that he plays with ease. This project proves he is capable of the most intricate harmonies and technique, to standard blu
If you listen to Ben, it's obvious that he's never going for that traditional blues thing. It's always like, "Ok, that's what you'd do in the blues, so, fuck it, I'm going to do this instead."
Although Monder's playing here is as great and original as always I think neb22 has a point : I too find that the whole combination sounds weird and unnatural, Ben's hip 'outside' lines just don't sound right with the straight ahead shuffle-blues comping that the band is providing...as if Ben would sit in on a rock gig...no reharmonization,no twist,no original idea..."first we play and then you blow"...just absolutely pointless
@denjz Check out Ben's playing on Ruper Ordorika's albums. It's straight ahead rock and pop songs, and Ben doesn't go way out or reharm or anything like that, because it's what fits that setting. With the Rolling Stones Project songs, they're all twists on the typical ways the tunes are played, and not one of the songs is played stylistically like the originals. It may seem weird to you, but I don't feel that Ben's take is "absolutely pointless" in any way.
I didn't mean Ben's playing is pointless, what I was trying to say is if you're playing a cover of such a well-known song of such an iconic band (that still exists!) you gotta come up with something more interesting than adding a triplet feel and having a great soloist...Otherwise, what's the point of playing such a cover?
This is awesome. I am a great fan of Ben Monder. Got to say he has a lot to offer harmonically to this wonderful song. What a fat beautifull tone. 2.24 is really interesting. Very unique style of improvisation.
I don't mind Honkey Tonky women much as long as they don't steal your wallet. but yea, it's those HonkyWA WA WA WA Tonk ones that get you every time

This tune is simply not worthy of a Jazz interpretation.

I do have Monder's transcriptions book - he is one of my favorite guitar players on today's jazz scene.
I guess you missed the point, what I was saying is the whole outcome isn't convincing enough despite Ben's great solo.
And also, trying to offend me doesn't prove your point better, beatch.

@denjz If Jimi Hendrix were still alive today, he'd sound like this Ben Monder solo.
