How about making the cannon more automatic. Have the trigger at the back, then several repeaters along the side connecting to the TNT to be launched. Then Trigger the TNT by stepping on the plate, and the repeaters will trigger the launched TNT automatically. Then just adjust the repeaters to alter when the launched TNT explodes. Automatic cannon.

Why get a tower of water instead you could get a tower of dirt. And why are you trying to blow of your own wall. Creepers only blow up when the player is 1 block next to them.
Only problem with water walling is it gives greifers a way into your base. Put the water inside a dual layer wall. The outer layer will get blasted by the cannon but the water will with hold the blast, leaving the inner layer intact. I prefer using lava however, that way people cannot swim through it.
