I don't think an atheist can just convince a theist to not believe in God. The theist has to go through their own mental/emotional process, and even then they likely won't drop their faith in God completely. They might drop their beliefs in the bible being the perfect word of God, or change religions, or drop religion but not God, etc.

@sansdeity420 atheists represent only 10% of the population in America. Additionally, many are like politicians: lying about their status to get what they want. Many people turn to God when they are in a crisis so 1st statement is intangible. Outside of an evil genius madman, I don't measure a persons worth with regard to what religion they belong to. I do, however, find it remarkable to see a scientist maintain faith-- it's equally impressive as an atheist joining a church to me.

I ask because I've never turned to any god when in crisis, and I've had my share. It wouldn't occur to me, any more than turning to Santa would. Reading Christopher Hitchens' book "God Is Not Great" really opened my eyes to the harm of religious faith in the world and in myself. Maybe some people can really read that book and retain faith but I couldn't.

Deconversion is a process. I started as a Christian because my mother was. Then I realized that the Bible had to be at least partly mythical. Then I started saying I really didn't believe the Bible much, but I was still a Christian. Then I started saying I still believed in God, but wasn't really a Christian. Then I was a Deist, then an Agnostic and finally realized I was really an atheist. The best we can do is help people along on that journey. Indoctrination is hard to overcome.

I was never religious. Even as a kid I saw it for what it was; mythology.

But you know, I'm just really smart and awesome, whilst most people inversely are not very smart or awesome.

I mean if I look at photo's of my old classmates currently they all got fat and have boring jobs and boring families.

This is one great video. It deals with a very daily based thing in our lives. I do agree with them that you first value more reasoning and critical thinking, then it get`s easier to go from a theistic point of view to a deistict point and when you keep on questioning your doubts and thoughts, you no more find any good reason to believe in the supernatural ( god, gods,deities, faries, soul, ETs, ghosts, and so on ...)
