I love that Margot Fonteyn is an extraordinary dancer for many reasons. I love that despite the fact she doesn't have sky-high extensions, or 50 fouettés, she has always been one of ballet's finest stars. It gives hope to those of us who don't have all of that either.
Margot Fonteyn is my idol i think she was so beautiful and does this dance so much justice! her partner Rudolf Nureyev is also a wonderful dancer! i do believe they were a perfect match.
swan lake is such a difficult ballet that it becomes a specimen of "classical ballet" and a ruler of technical achievement. people tend to forget that it is a romantic story, set to music tchaikovsky wrote for his own tragedy. these two dancers are reminding us all about that.
fonteyn is my perfect odette. i understand there is a long line of ballerinas who are more preferred in this ballet, but fonteyn - she is so delicate, so modest. she is not breathtaking but heartbreaking. i can't say enough good things about her here...and nureyev is the one who brings all these out from her. a real prince and a prince in love.
this version, with immature and unorthodox choreography, awful corps de ballet, and prima ballerina who has passed her physical peak, is the MOST beautiful swan lake in my heart. It has THE ONLY FINALE of swan lake - one and only. all other swan lakes remain incomplete. this is also the only odette that feels "right" (lopatkina in 1995 may come close). she is the unconfident and *unconciously* beautiful, desperately in love with her prince. all other swan queens are busy showing off themselves.
I went to see this ballet the other day, but this particular part was not included. Can someone tell me why is this? Is it normal for Swan Lake ballets not to have the bit from 1:12 till 2:45 ?
To answer a question, this was recorded in 1966 in Vienna. Dame Margot was 47.
They made the Guiness Book of records for the greatest number of curtain calls. I think over one hour. The year Rudolf was born... Fonteyn was dancing her first Swan Lake.
@Tusson07 No, they first danced SL together in 1962 in Nervi and was certainly not Fonteyn's first SL! To those who don't think she is very good: - stop comparing her to today's dancers, who are obsessed with split developpes etc - she is from the era when the ART and INTERPRETATION of the role was THE most important thing. A true artist in other words. I was lucky enough to see them at their peak as a partnership & eventually dance onstage with them.

or Create a video response I was but a boy/man in the American Air Force on leave in London. Was a budding young tenor and wanted to hear opera at Covent Garden. Alas, no tickets for the opera but there was Swan Lake with Margot and Rudolf in 1966. Got a special ticket in my uniform and sat next to Princess Margaret in a performance of Swan Lake - it changed my life and developed an extraordinary respect for this art form. Un dì all'azzurro spazio guardai profondo, ...
thank you: the quality of images is amazing; and as they have been the MOST amazing ballet couple ever, it's a gift for us all what you've done posting these excerpts for everyone's admiring stare.
@WTFOVER1901 they have very different styles and different ways of presentation. margot was less dramatic and less flexible, but her delicacy, reservedness and modesty makes her my favourite odette.
What a great moment in the history of ballet and dance. So happy that this has been preserved and is available for the world to view. Two truly great performers.

makarova and fonteyn had different techniques, there's no blowing anyone out of the water, they were two distinct personalities as dancers.
