Gary Coleman was a real-life, living person when the show was created, and the lines like "my life was over when I hit puberty" were deemed to be unnecessarily mean-spirited, since, y'know, there making fun of a real person's real tragedy. Also, specifying cutest little "black kid" on tv can be seen to imply that black kids in general aren't as cute as the non-black kids, and the US is more sensitive regarding race than the UK.
