You are right. The Union troops had been fighting for quite a while and recieved no reprieve or reinforcements while Jackson's fresh troops poured into the battle. The Union troops did not lose because of cowardice or incompetency on their part rather because Jackson's troops arriving on the battlefield caught them off guard. McDowell, the Union commander, came close to winning the battle.
The Union were not stupid or cowardly. Maybe you should study the battle of first bull run before you comment. The whole affair was muddled. Irvin McDowell almost won the battle but unexpectant Rebel reinforcements caught his tired forces off guard. The battle was won by luck of Jackson's troops reaching the field. If you want to learn about the battle I can tell you about it.
Sorry, forgot about this one book I read. The Union were about to win, but then the Confederates were able to counterattack. I just feel that the Union were kind of lacking........Leadership....and experience
@edavismookie25 you're right. mcdowell sent one regiment at a time, not even a brigade. the war would not have been over in 90 days or a month, but i bet it wouldnt have gone 4 years
@civilwar6165 McDowell was reluctant to begin with. His men were not ready for combat and nobody knew this better than McDowell. McDowell actually concocted a decent plan of attack that required cooperation from a general by the name of Robert Patterson who was suppose to hold Jackson's outnumbered troops in the vicinity of Harper's Ferry. He failed in that task and not only did he not pursue Jackson he didn't even tell McDowell that Jackson was on the move and would reach Bull Run in time to
@civilwar6165 affect the outcome of the battle. So McDowell was fighting with one hand behind his back! He committed all of his forces and on the verge of his victory Jackson sprung and brought up his troops and completely routed McDowell's tired and worn out troops that had almost broke the Rebel line. McDowell was a scapegoat for the battle and he spent the rest of his life trying to explain what happened and how the last few minutes of that battle tarnished his career. He was actually a
pretty decent commander who although didn't have much combat experience (along with many commanders who fought in the civil war) he still at least in my view was a able commander.
Theirs jackson look at him standing like a stonewall

Horrific, European linear warfare fought with modern rifled weaponry.

the armies should have been trained better instead of having at each other but they thought it was gonna be a 90 day war so they fought anyway

McDowell told Lincoln that the men were not ready, but Lincoln pushed for it because their 90 day enlistments were going to expire.

"If you think so, sir, you had better not say anything about it..."

If I'm not mistaken, it was the conversation between Beauregard and Jackson, wasn't it?

In RL, I believe it was.
