~What'th, -where's RoyRogers & Trigger when you need'em..! Modern horse-saddles apparently need to come with handle-bars; --hope the beautiful horse and the rider are doing fine now..!!
I'm glad that everyone sees that the horse wasn't at fault...I notice sometimes that a lot of people always say that the horse was stupid, wild, uptight, rebellious, disobedient, all the above.
Totally rider error. That saddle was not even close to being on tight. The horse reacted as most horses would after being blinded by a flag and having his reins yanked. In hindsight, the rider SHOULD HAVE dismounted when the saddle started to slip, readjusted the saddle/cinch and remounted. Safety first, ALWAYS. It would have been much better for him to come out of the parade formation & then rejoin versus the public seeing this and blaming the horse.
Wow, the comments are so serious and analytical re: who is to blame, etc. Don't horse riders and lovers have any sense of just plain interest in looking at the mishap? When you ride, things happen! Lighten up.
Absolutely correct, FrancesBoreland!! My husband and I said the very same thing; NOT the horse's fault. That saddle was ridiculously loose, the flag covered that horse's face, and the rider did pull on the reins most likely in an effort to 'hold' on, which most definitely would cause the horse to rear. His head was being pulled backwards!
accidents happen. its a horse in a scary situation. we all do what we can to ensure everyone's safety during the parade- there is borium on the shoes so they are not slippery.
Horse does not "throw" rider. Rider is inexperienced and/or causes the horse to lose his balance, slip, spook, and rear in a last attempt to avoid falling. All the while the rider is yanking on the bit causing the horse pain, and the horse is most likely wearing shoes on asphalt making it very slippery.
It looks like the rider hit his head on the ground, he also looked a little dazed getting up, going after his hat instead of the horse. It looks like the saddle was slipping and the rider was trying to scoot back up. I feel sorry for the rider and the horse. How embarrassing for the poor guy to get unhorsed on national - or internationa? - TV and in front of a large crowd. I hope rider and horse are both okay. The announcer said the reins got caught in a motorbike.
I saw that on tv. Totally rider error because it looked like the saddle was loose and slid, but at least the guy got up and wasn't hurt. Hopefully we can say the same about the horse.
I wouldn't call that 'throw', throw implies intention. I think the horse spooked because the rider lost balance, dropped the flag on his face and then accidentally pulled the reins which made him rear and then the rider fell off. Loose saddle seems to be the original cause.
something to think about is the horse reflects the rider/trainer. the horse had to deal with a large crowd a saddle slipping being smacked with a stick (flag pole) in the head and having half its head covered by the flag. after all that all he did was get up. good horse, good trainer somewhere.
also a thumbs up to the guy who recovered the flag before it hit the ground.
WRONG! What I see is a saddle that began to slide off the horse and a poor horse that gets a flag in the face. Actually this is a pretty calm horse considering all that really happened. Maybe you should change the name of this clip to something more accurate. Like maybe, "Rider Terrifies and Provokes Horse In Rose Parade".
The cinch was loose, the rider lost his balance and there goes the saddle. The rider then covers the horse's face with the flag and commits the cardinal sin of using the reins to stay on. Poor horse. Probably got his mouth ripped open. THAT'S why he reared. (Title should read: Poorly Saddled Horse Gets Mouth Ripped Out When Rider Loses Balance).
that is such crap! the rider is stupid and shouldn't be riding horses and they blame the poor horse who was just afraid from the face he hit it in the face with the flag and covered his eyes! complete garbage!
@Equestriangirl11209 "stupid" is such a strong word. The rider may know he made mistakes. The person that posted the video appears to blame the horse.
@trulyjupiter I posted this because I was shocked to see what happened. I didn't mean to appear to blame the horse, but I must admit, I don't have the knowledge of all that is involved with properly mounting and riding a horse. I really appreciate all of you who have given such informative comments. I hope that both the horse and the rider are OK (especially the horse!)
@BenhamWebs I hope they're both okay too. The horse did what horses do and that is react to a situation. I do think that this is a very well adjusted and trained horse, otherwise there probably would have been a lot of damage. Putting a horse in this type of crowd situation is like skydiving. You want to be sure your equipment is set up and adjusted properly. I sure wish I knew what the rider had to say about this.
If you blow this video up the cinch was not tight and the rider loss his balance and was sliding to off the horse, then the rider hit the horse in the head with the flag and covered the horses face, look at the saddle right after the horse gets up the saddle is half off and sliding off the horse. All human error, the horse did very good. Good boy.

Poor horse, bet mouth hurts after that one. Slipping saddle no excuse for jerking a horses head like that.

Oh gosh...so glad that horse did not take off and glad he was wearing a breast collar. Stressful day for horses.

Please wear helmets. Especially in parades. They make ones that look like western hats.

Wrong title. It was RIDER ERROR. Loose saddle and flag in horse's face as he is falling off sideways??? I would panic if I was the horse too...
