Sounds soooooooo unlike the real thing. Essentially, DCC Sound does not work. The problem is the sound that you are trying to replicate compared to the size of the speaker fitted to the model. Its a little bit like using earphones on max volume as speakers for your TV.
Whistle is too low quality, and too loud (maybe just recording?), and it doesn't have the bark of a Black 5. Look at some Black 5s on YouTube to compare.
dcc is the way forward, definately.i have just returned to the hobby after a sixteen year break and am amazed at the advances!i used to think the zero 1 system was a good idea.yes if you have a large fleet of d.c. loco's you might not want to change,or you may just enjoy the challange of making the loco movements look real by the carefull use of convetional control.whatever, its a broad church afterall, however the resistance and negativity that some people have towards dcc is ludacris!
There seems to be a lot of negative comment on DCC . I live on the other side of the world in Australia and have a DCC OO/HO garden railway and I use NCE pro cab radio. All my English locos have Howes sound. I have lost the coasting effect on some locos but Howes will send you via email all the CV settings if you ask them. My layout is 100m long and it works off one 5amp booster with up to six sound locos in action at the same time.
It's a pity there's so much venom being flung about on the subject DCC-v-DC. I'm a DC man-I can't afford DCC(over 50 locos running)but I would never call my modelling colleagues who prefer/adapt to DCC. It's a hobby and we enjoy it. One concern is that at an exhibition, an exhibitor was told to turn down or turn off DCC sound because of complaints from other exhibitors. Don't fight with each other, just keep your eyes(and ears!)on the exhbition managers! Let's support what we have, DC or DCC.
The owner of the Black 5 as fitted everything into the tender but is now looking at fitting an DCC Supplies Bass Reflex Speaker into the tender with the decoder in to loco, This will need part of the loco chassis to be machined out. I'm hoping to post an upto date clip once this as been done (A long way off).
Fitting Sound decoders into loco's is not hard, its fitting the speaker that can be a problem. Tender loco's are easy. just drill small holes in the bottom of the tender or, If you drill out the coal bunker use chunks of coal placed so that the sound comes through.
Small loco's require a bit of thinking when fitting Sound, you need to decide which decoder and speaker. An N Gauge ESU Loksound will do the trick but remember not to have a to big a train behind the loco or you will blow it.
With your attitude LMS you epitomise everything a hobby should not be. So you're no sheep and go to great lengths to prove it? (it's very evident through your writing style). We enjoy the hobby, you clearly don't. Citalopram Hydrobromide is a great drug. I know what it's like to want to constantly hit out. It helps me, and now I don't do it. You're clearly not happy! Mind you I'm not hence the pills (constant battle) but I put on a brave face and am nice to others; a much more attractive virtue.
lol - I don't read any magazines and barely any company websites either. I just love the fact you can have a model with realistic sounds eminating from it. If I could afford both funds and space, I'd have a large 00 layout, DCC, every loco sound fitted. Why the hell not? I also love the level of control you get with DCC, all from one unit without messing around with many switches, and the programming aspect if fun too. That's why DCC is popular - because it's fun - FUN...
Thanks Pierre for your comment, Yes A Hobby is FUN and DCC is here to stay. It's been around for a long time (American,Europe) and the demand is people want more. Yes it is expensive (DCC Sound) around £140.00 per loco (if buying already fitted) but the price will go down over time. Two/Three years ago the sound decoders where around the £200.00 mark, now they are below £100.00
Sounds rubbish. The sound is contained, not open. Whether this is the camcorder or the model itself is debatable. A 5 would not 'puff' like that neither, having driven 5000 myself loco's simply coast at that speed, there is not a continuous puffing sound.
There is no doppler effect neither. DCC is really ruining what is otherwise a cracking hobby.
Sadly I think you'll find it's people with attitudes such as yourself that ruin any hobby - I am a rollercoaster enthusiast aswell as rail, and in that community people with your attitude are ten a penny - and they spoil the atmosphere for everyone.
Gotta remember that this is afterall, a model. And if you can find a way to impliment a doppler effect with a static digital chip in a model loco as it passes your own ears wherever you stand, I'm sure you'd be worth a lot of money. Had to be said.
Thanks for your comment Pierre, I agree totally with your reply to LondonMuckShifters Comment. As I have just replyed to his the figures speak for them selves. ;-)
Just to comfirm, I was indeed responding to LondonMuckShifters.
I like DCC myself, used to be involved with a large private 00 layout. The scope of control was fantastic, especially once ZTC was replaced with the NCE ProCab system. The sound fitted locos were very enjoyable to drive being my first foray into DCC. Sadly I'm no longer involved with said layout and am now building my own 6'x6'x2' L-shaped N gauge British transition era layout and can't afford DCC. Not the effort, just the money!
Yes, it is a model, so why bother putting sound into it in the first place? Why not invest the sixty whatever pounds into 45110, 45407, 45212, 45305 etc etc. At least then you could hear the sound fromt he real thing, WITH doppler effect!
How is it people like me who are ruining this hobby? I am speaking the truth, it is the manufacturers, the magazines, people like MRE magazine who are ruining this hobby - by 'forcing' people along this route.
You have no idea want your talking about m8, If this was Rubbish as you say, than can you explain why people with an interest in Modern tech model rail are changing from DC to DCC or DCC Sound. As Pierre as said, People like you are ten a penny.
No, people like me know how to think! I do know what I am alking about, and I am not your mate. Have you tried running a RTR DCC fitted model on DC? The slow speed control is ruined by the resistance of the chip. Did you know that if a model stalls on DCC and is unattended to, the motor will fry?!? This wont happen on DC, since the current on DCC is increased until the circuit is complete.
How are the lights on your Hornby Pullmans on DCC mate? haha, pathetic!
I work/sell Model Railway DC and DCC and I get very Positive feedback from visiters who see and here DCC Sound. If this was Rubbish can you also explain how i have managed to sell over 100 locos with this type of DCC decorder fitted and non have come back. Is it because its Excellent or Rubbish!!. DCC is here to stay abd will replace DC in the future. So if you still think DCC is rubbish feel free to voice your norrow mindness somewhere else.
I dont see how I am narrow minded, in fact I believe that it is you who is narrow minded. The reason why DCC is proving so popular is because people are similar to yourself, narrow minded. They dont think, they buy because the magazines and model railway clubs tell them to do it, without thinking first.
The reason why you have such a positive response to DCC is very similar to why people pay thousands of pounds on sports cars, its the 'Emperors New Clothes', although it'll soon die out.....
were not narrow minded, people like us dont copy what others do, we go DCC because we like the effects that DCC has to offer. railways are all about sound and dcc brings just that to a loyut.
that has just convince me to go dcc after all my critism about it and negative feed i have given it. that was just really good please make more vids with the black 5 because that was grt
The Black 5 is not mine unfortunatly, I have asked my friend Peter if he could do a conversion for me if I brought a loco and sound chip. I have to spend my money on track and getting three Class 37's fitted with sound from work before thinking about steam. It will come, but not this year unless I get a good Christmas bonus.
If I have time in Redruth I will ask Peter if I can film his Black 5 on his layout (Crewelisle) before the doors open to the exibition "The West of England" on the 15th and 16th March 2008. Keep Watching...
i have a hornby select controller and tryed to programe a few locos to it and so far no joy, i quite fancy the new bachmann conroller but perswayding dad to get 1 isnt goin to be so easy.
i carnt wait for more videos cuz that sounds so like the real thing.
Sorry to say this but, The hornby DCC system is not the best thing in the world in fact it's just crap. You should send it back to Hornby for them to have the board in it replaced. Explain the problems your having with it included in the letter. They should then give you an updated controller which will sort out some errors. I work in a model shop and do not recommend any Hornby Digital item as they do not follow the NMRA compatibilty. Bachmann 'Dynamis' is a fantastic System, Get One.
The sound decoder in the Black 5 is a Howes sound. If going to DCC you must have controller and decoders that is NMRA, Hornby are not. Their 'Elite' controller follows some NMRA standards but I have never tried one and don't wish too. I am not Ante-Hornby as they make very good models (Although over priced) with lots of detail but when it come to something like controllers they suck..
The Elite is fully NMRA compliant too. I have a Dynamis simply due to the fact that it is more versatile. My mate has the Elite and, apart from awkward function operations, it is really easy to use.
The Bachmann Dynamis is a full NMRA and does a lot for the money so I will alway recommend it because it works and works very very well the other thing is the price.
You have a lot of negative things to say about DCC one I have to agree on 100% is yes if you put a DC loco onto A DCC Layout it will fry the Motor, Lima is a good example of going up in flames as this as happened to me when I first started out, But this is because I didn't read the instructions included with the system telling me not to leave a DC loco on the track not running because of the high Frequencies DCC signal and that the DC option available was for testing loco's before DCC conversion
How cn i get this is there a chip or sommat tht i cn put inot my trains tht i hav already gt or will i have 2 get locos wiv one in already or .. how does this work!
You can buy the DCC Sound chips from South West Digital, Howes Models or any shop who stocks ESU Loksound. Just surf the net for them. I believe you can buy the Black 5 chipped from Howes but you have to ask them.
You can buy "Grain of Wheat" 12volt bulbs from Expo Tools they have a web-site and there based in the uk. For loco lighting try "Firstclass trains" they advertise in Railway Modeller magazine. Their lighting kits are fanastic thay also do smoke units for steam and diesel locos.
Cheers JBT, I took a lot of footage before the show opened on sunday but the video files got damaged when i was downloading to Laptop. I had a fantastic shoot of the Black 5 coming out of the engine shed and going onto the turntable, saddly that was one of the files that got zapped. Never mind theres always next time.
Yes, liked it a lot. I've been wondering about going down the DCC route for a while; had quite a long chat with your friend (chap in the shorts) and got a lot of useful info. Please pass on my thanks!
Thanks for that, I will pass on your comments. If you need any more help you can always give me a call and I will be glade to help. The Bachmann rep was in the shop today and The Dynamis system is on it's way in the next 12 weeks (Hopefully) Lol.
