if people who visit the tomb would just shut up and show some respect, then it would make the visit that much more meaningful to those who show respect. Come on people. It's not hard. It's just common sense!!!
i know nothing of this memorial but i do grasp its for fallen unknown or unidentified soldiers. Nice to see such a respectful and honorable thing being done in a constant vigil guarding the tomb and ensuring it still maintains its military valor. Good job from our brothers over seas
I understand your perspective; however, silence is the highest form of respect not only do we in the military service demand and expect respect, this is the final resting place for countless soldiers. I understand civilians don't have near the discipline of military men and women.... let alone the Honor Guard; nevertheless, this is a "resting" place and you would not welcome noise nor commotion while you were resting.
The M14 rifle that the guard is carrying is not loaded, when it is time to change the guard they go through a full inspection. If you watch it or have seen it you will notice that they inspect rifle and look into the breach to make sure there is nothing in the chamber. However the Soldier who is administering the inspection is carrying a sidearm, which so happens to have a magazine in the weapon, it may or may not be loaded. They would not inspect the rifle if there were rounds in the gun.
i never actually guarded the tomb (like these guys), but for 4 years i did security all around the cemetary, fort myer, the pentagon, fort mcnair, and many other places of importantance in the area. many many ceremonies, endless nights staring at security cameras, walking around checking everything day or night; rain or shine. what these soldiers do and the 1's that help make it happen is really a special thing. im glad i was able to be a part of it for over 4 years. USA
FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME! I mean these people need to have respect for the fallen soldiers they fought for our country! The least they can do is pay some respect and be quit! (;
My feeling about visiting the tomb of the unknown soldiers is quite simple: If you can't show respect, don't bother to go near it. That place is for the honorable and respectful only.
PPL just cant be respectfull and quiet no matter what. You should able to hear a pen drop in that video., But no... there is someone cackeling, and a person stepping over the chain. Who cares if the tomb guard has loaded arms, it should not matter, RESPECT!!!! Good Golly America!
@nebraskapatriot01 Where does this Respect means silence idea come from? I will never get it. Do you repeat it because you were told that growing up? That is an honest question.
People can show their own respect in a different manner.
Telling someone who would not normally show respect through silence (Which itself is just odd) - is forcing them to show a false sense of respect.
People should be able to show respect how they feel.
If it means talking - or even dancing. At least its real.
@MrSockoOck Unless you've actually been to Arlington, you will never understand how profound the silence is. I'm not saying dancing would be wrong, but you have to understand how very seriously these Soldiers take this duty.
@MrSockoOck *facepalm* So you seriously think that "moments of silence" should be changed to "moments of silence, talking, yelling, laughing, singing, or dancing"?! Submitting to the (very slight) inconvenience of remaining silent is a symbolic act demonstrating that you are putting something else first and putting yourself second. This is what is called RESPECT. Just doing whatever the hell you want to is NOT.
@MrSockoOck Sir, I am a Sentinel who guarded the Unknowns (badge #284). In a free country, you can pay your respects in any manner that you desire. Your proximity to the plaza where these men lay in honored glory is not required for you to "pay respects", and you will not exhibit frivolity on that plaza. You are not free to do it in the presence of the Unknowns. This is not negotiable. If you do not understand why, it is not our duty to explain it. But you will comply. yellowecho@ymail
@MrSockoOck As a Sentinel who guarded the Tomb (badge #284), I can only hope that someday you understand why decorum is to be enforced at this hallowed place. Individuality is fine, but there are times when conformity is entirely appropriate. If you choose to show your respect through laughter, talking loud, or... ...dancing, you must do it outside the bounds of ANC, and your show of "respect" can be noted then by whoever is watching you.
I bet that guy crapped his pants. The soldiers M14 SHOULD be loaded and he should be empowered to shoot anyone defacing or dishonoring the tomb. It's a national monument and a tribute to ALL of our soldiers, dead or alive.
The mat is the location of the ceremonial 21 gun salute represented by 21 steps and a 21 second pause at each end. Standing on the mat while reprimanding some moron would desecrate the salute.
The other question as to whether they would actually physically act to prevent some desecration, they would and they will. Those are real bayonets and the guns are loaded. I strongly suggest that no one even consider anything so patently stupid.
@Gizmologist09 I am sure it has not escaped your notice but the Sgt. of the guard inspects the M14. He isn't going to do this while its loaded. He actually looks down the breach and muzzle. Having seen it in person and many videos I have yet to see them load a mag afterwards. The M9 that the Sgt. carries may be another matter. In any event I am sure the Capital Police will join in a beat down for anyone that tries to deface the tomb. And yes there have been attempts.
@Gizmologist09 the guns are not loaded. this is still the military. they would never shoot someone for crossing. but i can promise you nobody would ever pull a real life stunt. there is always someone ready and waiting for something to happen. these soldiers are just the 1st line of defense. they tell you to remove yourself and if you dont, police will make it happen. no loaded guns from these actual guards though. trust me. i worked there.
@truck090 Only a select few from the U.S. Army, yes. For starters, you have to be a specific height just to qualify (between 5'10" and 6'2"). It's a tough application and approval process and if you're chosen you spend the majority of the next two years rehearsing and maintaining your uniform.
@RBB1118 My Dad walked the beat during the winter of 1944 WW2 said it was the worst duty he ever did stateside.I guess times have changed. Freezing cold the guard shack was below the tomb in the back. Is it still there
@RBB1118 That is fascinating insight. Who knew such attention was paid to small details? That is why we still have the best military on the planet. USA!
@RBB1118 Either hand picked or requested a transfer to the 3rd Infantry Reg. while on active duty with no record of trouble civil or otherwise, high test scores on multiple tests, and then theres also drill team, honor gaurd, tomb guard etc. very demanding position
@defenske 100% sure. There may have been other service members there for various other ceremonies that are held here but it's strictly Army doing the guard duty.
I saw another video where the guard had to speak to spectators and I noticed in both this one and the last one that the guard left the runner to speak. Is that a coincidence or a rule?
@illgieyeaskelpitlug Sorry for the late reply...but the Mat is there to protect the marble. The Sentinel can walk anywhere on the plaza to do his/her job. There is no rule or coincidence to stepping off the mat.
@zeewaker the rifle is plainly and simply meant to be symbolic. The specialist or sgt. changing the guard has a loaded pistol. Also you can hand an officer a loaded weapon if ordered like during the ceremony although their rifle are not loaded
@jackl45 They wouldn't/can't use their rifle because its not loaded. How do I know? Notice the Commander of the Relief performs "inspection arms" prior to the relieving gaurd taking over - its illegal to hand an inspecting officer a loaded weapon. A soldier can get thrown in jail for it.
@mataleao1994 Good question. If it's happened in the past decade or so, you know someone would have it up on Youtube. I'm sure people have thought about vandalizing the tomb. People like Richard Paul Springer.
@readthisandsmile1 Nah, but he did something similar. President Reagan was given the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Broadcasters in 1992. As Reagan was giving his acceptance speech, Springer rushed the stage and smashed the award, which was made of crystal, in Reagan's face.
@mataleao1994 They carry sidearms, (and I'm sure those bayonets would be a real bitch,) but they do have the authority to arrest people since it's technically a military installation/base.
@adbartels keep in mind that these same vets that you are lashing out at are the same guys who raised the flag at iwo jima i.e during ww2 which i say is a real war (no offense to soldiers of the current iraq war). they are entitled to certain unlisted rights that me and you aren't. so what if they laughed? just because they did doesn't mean they have no respect for this unknown fallen soldier .you couldn't possibly ever understand the brotherhood of military unless you yourself were a soldier.
@ryderx3x3 I am not a marine but one of my friends used to be in the Corps. He taught me the importance of the words semper fidelis. For any Marine going Afghan good luck.
@adbartels I'm guessing the commotion around the :50 mark was a reaction to the man crossing the barrier. In their defense, these men are in their 80s and 90s and are hard of hearing and may not realize how loud they are. A lot of the quiet chatter was civilians conversing with them to say "thanks". I have another, less-watched video on my channel of the actual COTG ceremony where everyone was acting more like you described. As a former marine with 1/10 and 4/14, I was not offended at all.
I can recommend reading how the Tomb came to be. How the men were chosen that rest here. Why there is no longer a Soldier from the Vietnam Conflict and the history of the Guard.
You might find it much more educational than a video.
