Wayne2020z there were some trashy songs in the 80's but this is not one of them. This a pastiche on Bruce Springsteen's image of USA. But apparently even Bruce liked this song. There is more than to life than Cars and Girls.
I think Paddy is a way cleverer, nicer smarter lyrically and melodically than Morrisey or the pet shop boys so why doesn't he get the credit he deserves?
I'll never have enough of Paddy's music. As I'll never stop saying he's an absolute genius. Absolutely under-rated as well, but... who cares??? As usual, the very best is for the few.
I love their normal looks and features!! they'd be chased these days for not being sexy enough!! but the songs!! they were great! music is all that matters!
@alternatereality85 Yep, it is indeed a poke at New Jersey's finest. I love Springsteen, but that doesn't diminish this song for me. One critic said said The Boss's 1980 LP 'The River' had more cars than the Indy 500.
I've always loved this song, and through a major family breakdown over the past few years I've come to love it a lot more. Is the Brucie reference to Springsteen though? Shame if so, Paddy could have found someone far better to have a sideswipe at if thats the case. Anyway still love the song!
I just didnt expect the group to look like this! I used to love this song when i was 17 and couldnt imagine anything hurting more than cars and girls!
Wow I'm the same age as Paddy McAloon but only just discovering the Sprouts really (although I seem to remember liking one of their songs in the 80's possibly King of rock n roll). I'm loving the journey, the music just grabs my emotions in so many ways; Don't Sing, Hey Manhattan, Appetite, The Sound of Crying, Scarlet Nights,When Love Breaks Down, I could go on but suffice to say I have ordered every single Sprout album on Amazon, I have never done that before. The Sprouts are a phenomenon.
Yep...I'm in too. Hate to admit it cos it probably makes me sound like a right old duffer, but there do seem to be a lot more "products" rather than musicians around at the moment.
This is REAL music. I despise most of todays 'pop' music. The currant state of the charts in the UK sickens me beyond contempt. This band is a fitting tribute to an age that will be looked back on as the greatest time in the history of music. I PRAY these times will come back for the sake of any real music fan.
@trappedinlife29 - I totally agree mate - there is a lot of crap around now - I listened to the chart a few weeks ago - blimey it was rubbish. Put one my old cd's on instead & dreamed of my old tape player :o)
@trappedinlife29. Totally agree!!! todays chart music is unbelievably poor, manufactured drivel, churned out with no heart, soul or depth to it?! 99% of it is now made for and bought by 10-14 year olds who are yet to discover the far wider world of music. I've always seen chart music like the crust of the earth. Underneath is a whole world of music!! :D Thank god for record shops and the net!!
This is as fresh now as it was all 22 years ago, great band, great song.. Wendy Smith was some hottie, I had a major thing for her when I was about 12 lol.
