Gypsies were music players all over the Europe since ever, that doesn't make them the authors of all the European music. I have a lot of gypsy friends since the early 80s. What they play at home is music like TERNIPE, ANDO DROM. Just youtube on these, to find out the wonderful gypsy folk. I like very much both the authentic gypsy and roumanian folk -both played by gypsy bands- but NOT AT ALL the new ones performed with programmed electronic instruments which can be annoying upto the extremes.
These are roumanian "hora"s. If you search only "hora" however you'll find anything about "an hour" in spanish language.To find the actual roumanian dances / songs, one should look up for "hora lui X" - where X is a person's name, or "hora de la Y" / "hora din Z" - where Y / Z are names of villages / towns from Roumania. There are twice as many variations of "hora" songs in Romania as the total amount of "hora" variations in all the rest of the countries - it's for us like Polka for the Polish.

In romania avem instrumentisti care canta in concerte in Europa....majoritatea tigani. Canta mult mai bine tziganii..... un exemplu bun ar fi: Ionica Minune, care i-a speriat si pe sarbi... tambalisti ca: toni iordache (d-zeu sa-l ierte) ion miu,etc. aratami un roman care are macar jumate din valoarea astora.

Actually is a very fuzzy line between Gypsy and Romanian music here. Who ever tries to draw a clear line between them, does it only for nationalist purposes (or because of ignorance).

We have close to the same in the US called a "Fiddling contest" with violins played a lot like this accompanied by a six-string guitar usually and playing our folk music "Bluegrass" or something close. Nice to know we have something else in common.

Its very sad that an effort to appreciate another culture's music creates such strong feeling and no appreciation. We were in Romania, playing a tribute to the music of Maria Tanase, the best musicians were gipsy, all the orchestras had gipsy musicians, everyone was appreciative of our efforts even though we could not have been as good- but here I find a hostile community, so I will not even attempt to get involved.
you shouldn't try to understand it. I'm romanian. And you're right in a way. Gypsy music rocks. Like teh whole Balkan area in fact. Most of the romanian musicians are romanians, NOT gy. Gypsys rule anyway :P
Most of the greatest Romanian musicians are gipsies. I am not talking only about urban gispy music, abut also about peasant's music from all of the regions of Romania. Romanian music, like also Hungarian music, has a lot to do with gipsys, they are absolutely connected.
Unfortunately Roumanians do not accept this, because most of them do not want to be identified with gispsys, they have a sort of psycological complex I cannot understand.

It's not gipsy at all. This is a classic old "HORA LAUTAREASCA" from southern Romania, although often played by gipsy bands. The best interpretation I heard was that of Gore Brothers (Fratii Gore).
Yes, but what about the other tune. Its called "terno chelipe" on Taraf de haiduci CD dumbala dumba. I never heard of Fratii Gore, is there any recording?
I'm not sure what aofg is trying to say ?? It's Romanian, often played by Roms & that's it. Does it matter if the violinist isn't 'gipsy' (& maybe the box player is!). A friend of mine many years ago in Paris, Zarko 'Jagdino' Jovanovic (Rom musician from Serbia) taught me to be very weary of people trying to put ethnic tags on evreything, many of his relatives ended up in Auchwitz because of it . So, well done andreasrudena & never mind biggots!
What i want to say is that i can accept puting "Gipsy " tag if a piece of Romanian folklore is played by a Gipsy but if it's played by a Dutch guy, the piece has nothing to do with Gipsyes anymore so keeping the Gipsy tag only for comercial purpose is quite insulting.

there a lot types of manele, if I want to compare the romanian manele with some turkish or other balcanic songs I won't find very big difference.

Actually is a very fuzzy line between Gypsy and Romanian music here. Who ever tries to draw a clear line between them, does it only for nationalist purposes (or because of ignorance).

@BarosancaUK Nu ma pricep eu prea bine la muzica, dar intre o sarba, o hora o geampara si muzica tiganeasca fac diferenta, iar asta nu prea e muzica tiganeasca. In muzica tiganii au furat(putem spune imprumutat) "spiritul locului", dar asta nu inseamna ca hora si sarba deja le apartin. Pur si simplu tiganii au cantat sarbe si hore pentru ca erau platiti de cuconasi s-o faca nu pentru ca ar fi fost ale lor. Asa ca, mucles!!!

@iulian447 Poate sunt vacar, dar sunt unu cu scoala, cea ce tiganii nici "in dusmanie" nu au. Muzica asta seamana foarte mult cu cea a lui Anton Pann, care era arman(adica tot un roman, dar unu care sigur se trage din daci nu din punjales) si care stia sa cante pe note, asa cum fac romanii, nu lautar urerchist asa cum erau tiganii in acea epoca.

Its very sad that an effort to appreciate another culture's music creates such strong feeling and no appreciation. We were in Romania, playing a tribute to the music of Maria Tanase, the best musicians were gipsy, all the orchestras had gipsy musicians, everyone was appreciative of our efforts even though we could not have been as good- but here I find a hostile community, so I will not even attempt to get involved.

Most of the greatest Romanian musicians are gipsies. I am not talking only about urban gispy music, abut also about peasant's music from all of the regions of Romania. Romanian music, like also Hungarian music, has a lot to do with gipsys, they are absolutely connected.
Unfortunately Roumanians do not accept this, because most of them do not want to be identified with gispsys, they have a sort of psycological complex I cannot understand.

It's not gipsy at all. This is a classic old "HORA LAUTAREASCA" from southern Romania, although often played by gipsy bands. The best interpretation I heard was that of Gore Brothers (Fratii Gore).

I'm not sure what aofg is trying to say ?? It's Romanian, often played by Roms & that's it. Does it matter if the violinist isn't 'gipsy' (& maybe the box player is!). A friend of mine many years ago in Paris, Zarko 'Jagdino' Jovanovic (Rom musician from Serbia) taught me to be very weary of people trying to put ethnic tags on evreything, many of his relatives ended up in Auchwitz because of it . What i want to say is that i can accept puting "Gipsy " tag if a piece of Romanian folklore is played by a Gipsy but if it's played by a Dutch guy, the piece has nothing to do with Gipsyes anymore so keeping the Gipsy tag only for comercial purpose is quite insulting.
