I've always loved Pridgen because you can just tell he loves to play the drums. And he's so tight and an all around amazing player. He'll always be my favorite
@daonpa This halfway wanna be goth kid obviously is a really lame-ass douchebag who's probably never just thrown on some sick tunes and jamed to them. Real music for real people: Tool Meshuggah MarsVolta, feel it. \m/
My eyes and ears just blowed a load wow he's got some of the fastest hands i have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those drums was glad when he stopped haha!!! He is phenomenal no doubt!!!!!!!!
i can't explain it but every time i watch this it literally brings me to tears. the way he plays is so expressive of the passion he has for music, it's truly an amazing sight to see.
stop bashing Pridgen. you cant say that he is not a good drummer... its just stupid. hes played with the mars volta, christian scott and now his own band and does not sound like anyone else and if he does, show the rest of us who he copied. saying something is just technique is also dumb as music is just sound patterns we can recognize. ifs fine that you dont like the patterns he is playing, but to say its not music, killing the music etc. proves that you dont know what music really is
no man,,jojo mayer, chris coleman, steve smith, dave weckl, carter beaufort and other are technique and originals and very creative, thomas is just a illusion i'm sorry,he don't play the music,he kick the drum and nothing.. this man kill the music,it's not good for the music
@FrizzyDiouleBiGbonus What are you talking about? Thomas is just as creative, listen to what he's playing, listen to the work he's done. Listen to ANYTHING he does, he's all about creativity and free expression. His patterns are unorthodox, you can recognize his playing a mile away. Thomas Pridgen is not only good for music, he's one of a handful in his generation pushing the boundaries of music.
@FrizzyDiouleBiGbonus I've read each of your comments, and all I have to say is that you are uneducated and shouldn't be allowed to comment in the first place.
Lol Ray is good, but he's got that clearly vocational style of playing. He plays what people want him to play. TP is one of the most creative players around both in the way he plays his drums and the way he sets up his kit. He's got the jazz style from his berklee education and he mixes it with the power and flash of rock and gospel.
@snorpthus youtube studied genius he sounds nothing gospel although growing up in church (ive played at gmwa with him for years).his style is much more reminiscent of vinnie.
I feel like there is a lineage with three specific drummers, chronologically starting with John Bonham, Danny Carey, then Thomas Pridgen. All three brought a certain POWER-HEAVY element of rock drumming to a similarly new level in each's respective time period. Danny Carey really brought the finesse and songwriting ability into this vein, and Pridgen is bringing in the "gospel chops". I guess it just sort of hit me how much of a ROCKER Pridgen is. Thoughts?
@snorpthus yeah man, it's amazing. personally, these melting pot style drummers always seem to amaze me the most. the more you broaden your horizons the more beautiful it seems to become. danny carey, thomas pridgen, and marco minnemann are probably my 3 most favorite drummers on the planet.
@snorpthus i agree. Pridgen has this intense, clearly evident style of gospel chops while still incorporating a rock feel. His work with The Mars Volta proves it. This dude's brilliantly talented.
@arthurkitchen Same here, he's just like playing fills all over the place, no groove at all, I under stand the skill involved but c'mon stop screaming cause you fucked something up, Stop trying to show off so much
@arthurkitchen If you honestly think this you're an idiot. Thomas has won best up and coming drummer more times than any other drummer ever, he's been playing since he was three, won the NATIONAL GC drum off at 9 yrs old (beating out veteran drummers), went to Berklee, among many other highly respected awards in the drumming community. Watch all his videos where he's soloing, this is what TP does. Its all about energy and soul. When he wants to play a constructed beat, he will.
@winnerbaby44 Korn, I have a masters in music and listen to literally everything. I have gone back and listened to the 2008 MD festival performance of Pridgen and I do have a little more respect for his playing when he performs with others, namely the two guys on that disc. the Mars Volta though just doesn't do anything for me, nor does his soloing . It is just too haphazard and uses far too much bashing of giant crashes for my taste. Ray is far better , taking a high paying gig like Korn.!
@arthurkitchen It's because of that thinking that the music industry is the way it is. People just think in terms of "how much money is this going to give me?". Thats why Geniuses like Spanky McCurdy and Aaron Spears are playing with Lady Gagas and Usher's.. which are musical anedoctes.. not original at all.. and thats a shame.. a lot of those guys could be creating groundbreaking music. And that coming from a master in music is just SAD.
@winnerbaby44 Totally agree, it really is sad hear these from a guy who took a masters degree in music. @arthurkitchen I honestly admit that I don't have the have skills to compete with you and I don't even have the money to get myself a cam neither do have time to play in a studio just to take a video of myself just to show you, maybe you have a confusion with regards to "taste & style" and "ability & technique".
@arthurkitchen Which I do think that you're more into taste & style which is more of a personal opinion, but to say that Ray Luzier is more than Thomas Pridgen in drumming that's just wrong. Especially when you're comparing both high level drummers, guys that which could do almost anything on the drums that the only thing that they could differ is taste & style which "again" is a personal opinion. Pardon me for saying you're a noob, just got into hype that time. Hehe... (PEACE)
@arthurkitchen I do know that Ray Luzier has sick poly rhythms and is really constructive in playing, but the definition of "playing" by the word itself that's just got to be Thomas Pridgen and I also know that this wasn't his best solo, hehe... Try listening to Christian Scott's album entitled "Rewind That" check the tracks titled: Say it, Suicide, Kiel (by the way it's jazz) and also Zenith Patrol, tracks titled: State of grace, New joppi, Big easy. Of course drums are by Pridgen.
