I personally like both Android and Ubuntu but I know for fact that Android will take a $hit and die out of consumer market and will become next Linux. Windows 7 and Mac OS are far more superior (not faster though) than Android even on such lightweight netbook. It will only succeed on future devices that are in between phones and netbooks.
Linux is the kernel. All these other apps are bundled together to make the distribution, but at the end, the kernel is Linux and not the other apps or the combination of it.
The fact that Android uses the Linux kernel makes it a Linux distribution.
I agree. Android will never even me a slim match against Windows 7/ Mac in sheer power. Even competing against Windows CE, the stability of Android is shit.
I just switched from Windows CE to Android and i've got to say, it was a hard switch. Other than a faster browser experiance and a faster youtube player, Android is seriously limited in USEFUL applications.
well, android doesn't surprise that much on a netbook, but the idea of being possible to replace it with Ubuntu Linux i can see as much more interesting...
yes, i think so. But android platform is important in netbook market because android is merits like 100% opensource, lightweght , android market for killer applications.
2. android support various killer applications via android market.
3. customizable 100% full open mobile stack.
As you know, netbook is focus on internat task , office task , mobility, lower power consumption. android will support this characteristics for netbook.
well i'm a big fan of the android platform and wish you all the best with this, however i was wondering whether you're going to do certain customization for the UI ? like what are you going to do with the notification/status bar ? and are you to add certain out-of-the-box applications such as a doc or xls editor ?
Yes, user-space software is not GNU/GPL . But, we can download free software at the android market website. I think that android software is not gpl licenses to improve android platform as business model.
Android is Awesome! I use it on my acer aspire one!

I seen your boot comparison of Ubuntu, Android and Fedora. You may want to consider adding a link to that clip towards the end of this one.
A more in-depth review of this netbook with more apps enabled should follow.

thank you for yor opinion about android on netbook. I think so.

I doubt it will die out.
It has a few distinguishing factors that will let it succeed where linux failed.
1) Permissive license. This allows proprietary extensions to the OS that can make money.
2) Apps run on a virtual machine. This allows an app to run on different variations of android without having to rewrite it.
3) App Store. Linux has repositories but no popular commercial app store.
4) Hardware Support. Companies such as Texas Instruments are optimizing android for their chips.

Okay, do we all realize that Android IS Linux?
smileman66 2 years ago
Android uses the Linux kernel. It has a lot of software in addition to the kernel that is not used on typical Linux distributions.
Saying something is Linux is ambiguous because there are so many other details that make up an operating system.

android is 13seconds like above video.
fedora is 49~69seconds.

We need someone to do an Android distro.. that's the component that's missing at the moment.
We all need to remember however that although Android uses the linux kernel, it is NOT the GNU userland we are used to.
