Absolutely! Mick Karn was an incredible player, very inventive and original, sadly missed now. Jeff Berlin was wrong when he said all fretless players sound like Jaco Pastorius, especially with guys like Mick, Pino of course and Percy Jones, all true innovators!
Yeah, I´m 100% sure it´s a fretless. Being a fretless player myself I recognize those characteristic tones! Just wonderful! They don´t make tunes like this anymore, i.e, superb musicianship, amazing tunes and lyrics and super cool!
Jamie's guitar work is wonderful. He used a lot of gear to get his sound...a couple rack stacks on stage which he continuously adjusted between songs. Very creative and ingenius artist.
Al love this album so much. One of those fairly rare albums where one could listen all the way through and really feel like you are enjoying a band. A *band*.
"when a saint starts hiding sings.." these guys had amazing lyrics. I loved this band. They were way ahead of their time and never got the appreciation they deserved for being so innovative.
@casienwhey .. I agree. These guys were lyrical geniuses. I had the album and would listen over and over while reading the lyrics. I STILL remember all the songs by heart, even now!!! But the line goes "when a saint starts hiding sins"
@casienwhey MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH IT, DONT FORGET IT WAS SYE THAT DECIDED TO GO INTO THE HAT BIZZ SO WHATS IT GONNA B LOVE WHAT THEY DID WHEN THEY DID IT. LETS JUST DIG THAT HEAY.
This is my all-time favorite Fixx song. I remember being 13 in 1985 playing this in my walkman all the time. They have alot of great songs but this is my favorite. I think Phantoms is their best album but this album is special to me because it was my first album by them. Actually the title track Reach The Beach is probably may second best if not Precious Stone would be second. My top five band of all-time as well.
Mine, too!! (As well as "Outside", "Time In A Glass", and "Sinking Island"!) LOVE the bass line!! One of these days, I'll have to learn how to play it.
"All aboard before the storm...." I love poetic creativity.

Where is the rest of REACH THE BEACH? Not long ago there was much more of my favorite album to enjoy.

I love the bass tone in this song! It may be a fretless bass, I'm not sure. But the tone is absolutely killer on this one.
Wouldn't be the same song without it.

Cy was influenced somewhat by Bowie, but I never heard anyone else who really sounded like the Fixx or had similar lyrics. They are one of a kind.

Great musicianship, inspiring lyrics, and just wonderful music full of melody and interesting hooks.
There will never be another Fixx. I'm glad that they're still playing.
Today's music is so... uninspiring!

My quiet favorite Fixx thing.
"Across the waves..What was he thinking?" brave idealists of the UN- we really are under-appreciative en masse..
