The number is probably high because of some traditional cult-ish version of hinduism that has become the norm is many societies. (religion's to blame again !)

Not often i have to challenge you but while this is a shocking case and this evil prick might have carried out this deed according to Islamic culture we must remember that Bangladesh is largely a Muslim society and it is that Moslim society that is looking to give him a life sentence. Now if this arsehole gets off due to lobbying from Islamic clerics and hence this deed sanctioned by Islam, we can truly blame Islam. It in itself is more than an oppressive movement from the Catholic church, but a religious war in which both sides had faults.
