I don't think the version is silly. When I first heard it at another church a couple years ago I wasn't too impressed - it sure wasn't like the original. As a bunch of us developed our contemporary service at Resurrection, & the further down the evolutionary path we went, the more I thought about "Grace Like Rain" If you like the BCP or the BAS, you likely won't like this version of Amazing Grace, but I would argue the Prayer Book was revolutionary in it's day and so is contemporary worship.
