I suggest u check out "Jesus the Magician" by Morton Smith, of the U of Chicago..Also G.R.S. Mead of Cambridge U.. They have some interesting insights into the genesis of Christianity..Mead's "Did Jesus Live 100 B.C? is especially interesting..

@UnexpectedWonder - Yes, and can probably find them used at reasonable prices..The Mead book was an enquiry into the Jewish Talmud Jesus stories, the Toldoth Jeschu, and some statements made by the Church Father, Epiphanius..Frankly, I'm not sure which is the most accurate account- the traditional or alternative- but the later does seem to explain why there is no record of a Jesus miracle-worker/healer in the Roman records of the traditional time period..
