that depends more on the watchmaker then the brand. its very delicate to regulate the sound. a 100th of a millimeter too close and you might get a very metallic sound, or stuttering sound. a 100th too far away and it wont strike with enough force, making a very dull sounding dong. Normally larger cases sound better smaller, and since this is a pocket watch, i suspect that its watchmakers "fault" that the dong sounds bad.

actually, you cant really tell anything from the sound on youtube. So unless you sit with both of them side by side, you cant really judge the quality of watchmaking <.<

years of school to become a watch maker? it depends, if your just assenbling, like you would in a small factory like Lum-Tec then you only need 2, but if you want to work somewhere like Audemars Piguet where they make all parts from scratch then you need 8

wow, well obviously piguet is a better choice, many of my great grandparents had them, but i certainly think rolex does have a very understated nice design, but we all have certain brands we dont like

@scotfreak Just my opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's just that every time I see a Rolex, I think about the millions of fakes out there. I think Rolexes are the most counterfeited watches. Probably because of name recognition. That's why I personally do not like them. Again, my own opinion. To each his own.

They're the hammers to strike the chimes to create the notes for the repeater...I thought that was obvious to anyone...

How to read a repeater:

The first striking indicates the hour. The double-strikes indicate the quarters, and the final striking indicates the minutes after the quarter indicated. In the example here:

10 hours, 51 minutes (3 quarters plus eleven minutes)

The Bulova Millennia 96C21 has a Minute Repeater and alarm feature, but I doubt anyone would wake up with such a small minute repeater.

the 'ding' chime is better than the 'dong'..

It has to do with the fact that this is a recased pocket watch movement. Often the case is that the case does not resonate properly with the chimes and this dulls the sound of the repeater.
