  • I accept that our culture has eschatological overtones that can't be undestood by foreigners, buy consider that log as a metaphor of plant material that fertilizes the forest, that's also a kind of "shit" itself, but thanks to this thing, plants live and all of us live. The same about the "caganer", ous christmas most famous character, whose origin means the fertilization of the land. That is the real present from them both, representing the circle of life.

  • We, the Catalan people, are not those "Spaniards". These "opportunists

who invaded and slaughtered while pretending to

spread the word of god" in Latin America as you said. Those are Castilians, ad we are also considered as a kind of colony of them into the Spanish State. The Latin americans could get rid of them, but we can't, we are too close to them, unless one day we will be allowed to call a referendum about independence, just as Scotland is about to get. Very difficult!

  • @pverdaguer - I'm an animal rights activist,

a vegetarian. I'm just as intolerant of Bull Fighting

as I am of ludicrous traditions involving shitting

logs. As a world traveler throughout Latin America

I am deeply resentful of Spaniards. These opportunists

who invaded and slaughtered while pretending to

spread the word of god. While I find most traditions

to be rather silly, to take a log and tell children that

it shits presents is mind boggling.

  • ... what the fuck? LOL

  • Ugh! You know...I hear very little about Catalan and

when I do, it's always THIS kind of thing. "Caga Tio"

is literally meant to SHIT presents (Caga= shit).

While I'm tolerant of other cultures...even enthusiastic,

I find these people an embarrassing aspect of Spain.

Like the retard in the family that nobody talks about.

Sorry, this "Caga Teo" thing is really stupid!

  • lol so you feed the log then beat the shit out of it, good idea lol

love the catalans, and there culture,

    coming from an irishmen!

  • PD: Visca el Tió (i no Caga tió...), Visca la cultura catala i Visca Catalunya!!! //*//

  • Just a correction: Instead of "a region of the northeast of Spain, Catalonia" as it said in the video, it is correctly "a nation inside the Spanish state, Catalonia"

  • I just did it yesterday. Many years ago, the Tió used to shit chandy and fruit. Now it shits plasma TV's, clothes and multimedia devices.

Still, it's a lovely tradition that I won't stop doing as long as I live.

  • jajaja ben trobat!!

    FELICITATS!

  • Heard about this on QI and HAD to research more haha

Apparently the name translates as "shit log" lol

I was in stitches when I heard about the phrase surrounding it too lol,

    "Eat well, shit hard!" lol

    FELICITATS

  • El "TIÓ "SEMPRE S'HA DIT "TIÓ" i no cagatió.

  • is this serious or like a little traditional joke for the kids?

  • its like santa, kids truly believe it gives away presents

  • @benjiz69 It's just a little traditional joke for the kids. People buys it on a Christmas Market, they don't go to the forest to find it. It's a log with a face painted on it and a typical catalan cap. Kids feed it during some time (they put food and adults make them believe it has just vanished) and on Christmas evening all the family sings a song while they hit the Caga Tio with a stick (usually smaller). Caga Tio is covered with a blanket and some adults put presents (not turron) under it.

  • Visca les tradicions Catalanes !!!!

  • Ben realitzat.

  • you haven't seen the cagoners, then?

  • "Tió" doesn't mean "man", in catalan it means "peace of wood". ;)

  • "caga tió, admetlles i turro, no caguis avellanes ke son salades, caga turrons! ke son mes bons!"

when I was a child this is what I sang ( or something like that) while I kicked the shit out of the "tió" with a kane... so many years now...sniff

  • volia dir "Visca"

    Eccellent video!

  • haaa jo no em sabia aquest final... què trist :'(

    Vista el tiò!!

  • collonut !!

  • This has been the first video I have found about something cultural. I enjoyed it. I have been trying to make videos about religious cultural celebrations here among Mexicans, Puerto Ricand, Dominicans and later on the many other ethnical groups we have here in the Bronx, NY. One question please. What kind of file of what resolution did you use.

    Thank You!

  • 'Caga Tio' is a cute and funny tradition of a small territory in Europe called Catalonia, not some tribal religious ritual of Latin America indigenous people.

  • Is not 'a small territory', it's "Our Country".

13 milions of inhabitants is not a "small territory"

  • Yeah, sure, mine is bigger than yours :p

  • was this made in the U.S.A? the documentary i mean

  • heh crap log.

  • yes, its real xD i'm catalan *¬*

  • yes. it is. If you don't belive me visit Catalonia next December.

  • It's true. You're right. We'll be sure to change it before submitting it to the Oscars. gracies pel teu interes.

  • @oriolcara gilipolles.

  • @ilargitxo2 Tio means uncle in spanish :P

  • AHHAAHAHAH YESSSS

  • Let me translate your wise comment to English speaking people:

    - A shit to Catalans.

Thank you for showing everybody how polite a Spaniard can be and what kind of loathing idiots we have to stand. Have a nice Christmas.

Cheers for posting this video !

XD

  • viska el caga tio! xD jajajaja

  • Vinga no em fotis!!! xDDDDDDDDDDD

  • vamos no me jodas!!! xDDDDDDDDDDD

  • I'm catalan, and when I was child, the logs had not face and hat, it was a simply and enormous log taken from the forest, and it had to have food to take presents for christmas, this is only a comercial tramp.

Save the authentic tió! (and not "caga tió")

  • You are right about that, however, I think the 'modern marketing concept' of the Tió is not that bad, as at least markets an actual tradition of the country. Probably this commercial twist has saved the Tió from the claws of Santa (pun intended)

    Bon Nadal per a tothom!

  • Well, as a catalan person, I must say that this video is not completely right.

People don't always go to the woods to look for the log, there are shops put up on Christmas with different sized logs.

Also, about the song part, each family sings their own version of it, which means that there are hundreds of different versions in 'Catalonia.'

And it does not always give sardines or 'catalan' nouget, but it can also give other presents (toys, money, books, etc) [=

  • What an explanation... XD In fact,it's not exactly this way. Yes, 'cause every family has a version of the traditional song. And, well, we buy the tong in the Santa Llúcia market, before Christmas. Though my grandfather has one made himself... Caga Tio is a very cute tradition, I'm 18 and I still hit the Caga Tio every year.
